Skin care while you’re travelling doesn’t have to be complex. Be it a one-off or regularly for work, check out our Travel Q&A.
I fly a lot for my job, which I love, but it’s drying out my skin dreadfully. Sometimes I get into meetings or presentations and my makeup is flaking already and other times I get breakouts. I need to know how to manage this because I look after my skin and I don’t understand why this happens and I feel it shouldn’t. Please help.
Stephanie | WA | age 35
Air travel simply sucks the water out of the skin. When you only fly 2-3 time a year your skin can recover each time, however poor Stephanie’s skin doesn’t appear to be allowed this time. Coupled with the stress of her job causing hormonal upsets her skin is quite impaired, and above all is dehydrated deep down.
So besides changing her job what can she do?
Skin care at home
- Don’t over exfoliate to remove the flaking – use an enzyme mask 2 x week to clear away this skin as it nourishes. Over exfoliation and scrubbing will stimulate the skin, making the situation worse.
- Reduce the % of Vitamin A she is using. It remains the mainstay of her skin care routine, but sometimes less is more as Vitamin A is an exfoliant and stimulant to the skin as well.
- Nourish the skin with antioxidants, peptides and stemcells (stemfactor) – can’t add enough of the latter.
- Moisturise and Protect using a richer moisturiser.
- Sleep in a restorative mask such as the Aspect Probiotic sleep mask.
- Super foods – take them every day and take them with her. This goes along with diet choices. Often when we are stressed we don’t eat so well, drink alcohol and our sleep suffers. Daily pre and pro-biotics will help with all of these.
- Take a heavy water spray with her (everywhere) and use it whenever the skin starts to feel dry. It will penetrate makeup without upsetting it. CosMedix Mystic is my take away spray – love it! Okay to take on domestic flights also.
On the plane
- Drink water and try to close your eyes and shut out the world. Download a meditation or relaxing app and use the time quietly restoring your soul.
- Go makeup free, and apply the Probiotic sleep mask whilst you are in the air especially on longer haul flights. On arrival wipe off any excess or if necessary take Micellar Waters to cleanse your face and then apply your makeup.
- Makeup preferably is from a range which feeds your skin rather than drying it further. The Osmosis Colour range is a perfect choice and it includes a concealer with a hydrator at one end – perfect for any dry spots as they appear.
- Pack the Aspect Stop Spot to dry up any breakouts as she can feel them coming.

Every time I fly my skin dries out so much. It feels awful and my makeup doesn’t sit right. I’m getting married in Bali next year and am worried about how I’ll look and what the photos will show.
Lou | VIC | age 27
Firstly, a BIG Congratulations to Lou and her fiancé!! It’s a very exciting time in anyone’s life and shouldn’t be marred by these sorts of worries.
Lou’s skin will be helped by the increased humidity in Bali, although this can upset her makeup too on the day depending on Lou’s general skin type and the makeup she will use. I suggest she discusses this issue with a reputable makeup artist if she isn’t travelling with one. Our Meagan can certainly give her advice via email or phone if she is planning on DIY for her makeup.
Her skin regime is best begun now to get her skin is its best possible condition prior to the day. A healthy skin is better able to withstand everything that can be thrown at it including dehydration from a long haul flight! Ideally I would ask Lou to come in for a personal skin consultation but in this instance she submitted an online one and these were my recommendations:-
Lifestyle from now until the BIG day
- Eat well, minimising carbs and refined sugars and improve her gut health (helps us all) with daily super foods.
- Increase her water intake to 2 litres a day and decrease her alcohol and coffee.
- Exercise daily, but not be a gym junkie and get sufficient sleep. Learn to manage stress.
Skin Care
Lou has minimal skin concerns, it is dry most of the time and drier in winter and when she flies so I suggested products to deal with that:
- Aspect Dr Blush Free Kit as it contains 3 of the products (full sized serums) I believe will help.
- She will need a cleanser to use am and pm – Aspect Dr Mild Clean is a great option.
- Hyaluronic Serum is a beautiful skin smoother for after serums and before SPF once the kit Resveratrol is finished. Makeup goes over it beautifully.
- CosMedix Restore Moisture Rich Mask – 1-2 week. I also suggest the Osmosis MD Polish to try prior to the big day. Using this on the day will give her skin a super healthy glow and lift any dryness she may have (hopefully not by then) following the flight.
- Cosmedix Hydrate+ for her daily moisturiser/UV blocker. Essential every day.
- And just like Stephanie above, dry skin should never go past using a heavy water spray – throughout the day – CosMedix Mystic!
Lastly – arrive early in Bali to let the skin adjust to the new climate and then sit back and ENJOY!!
