Vitamin A (or retinol/retinal) is one of the greatest skin care vitamins for fighting signs of premature ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and skin tone and texture. It achieves this by speeding up cellular turnover, meaning that you are making newer cells faster, leaving you with clearer, brighter, healthier-looking skin. Along with this, vitamin A stimulates collagen. This means that you will have firmer skin with fewer fine lines. Vitamin A is also an antioxidant, fighting free radical damage. We love vitamin A, and there is one for everyone, regardless of your skin type and condition. Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers are covered too, with a vitamin A alternative, Bakuchiol. This week in our vitamin A product review we are looking at the serums and creams that we love and recommend. Read on to find out which ones…
Meg’s Vitamin A Product Review
“For many years now, I have been using Osmosis MD Calm, and I still absolutely love this serum for not only the retinol benefits, but also the calming ingredients that it contains. But more recently, I have been using a lot of PCA Skin products, and I am loving them! PCA skin care is not only backed by science, but also has a deep respect for human health, animals and the environment. All PCA Skin products are free of synthetic dyes and fragrances, mineral oil, lanolin and phthalates.
PCA Intensive Age Refining Treatment 0.5%
This retinol feels so good on my skin. It is smooth and silky and feels hydrating and doesn’t cause any irritation. I have fairly normal skin, but it is on the thicker side, so I like to use a retinol to turn my cells over faster as I do have a tendency to get dead skin build-up. I have been using this retinol for a fair few months now and am loving the results. My skin looks brighter, tighter and has a nice even tone and texture. Here are some key benefits with this retinol:
- Minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and firm the skin with retinopeptide and stem cell extract technology
- Strengthens the skin with minimal irritation using stabilised retinol
- Reduces age-related skin yellowing and redness with niacinamide
- Uses the patented OmniSome delivery system to carry ingredients deeper into the skin for superior results
I would say that this retinol is good for all skin types, unless you are super sensitive, in which case I would try the PCA Retinol for Sensitive Skin.”

Julie’s Vitamin A Product Review
“I’ve said before in reviews if you want to avoid the squish, use a vitamin a product.
I am STILL using the awesome Osmosis MD Correct to maintain some semblance of firmness and keep those cells ticking over, though I do worry, what if those cells run out one day, what if no more come through, what if there are none to tick over, what if my face sags down in to no man’s land. Arghhhh!! But skin is an amazing thing and cell turnover may slow down as you age but it will continue until we are gone, phew!! (and you can keep it speedy with vitamin a😊).
Do we aim for perfection?!
I recently saw a quote, from Osmosis founder Dr Ben, that if you precisely target with the correct products, your skin is capable of almost near full recovery, (it was something like that). That’s pretty amazing, could it be possible to recover from every skin issue just by using topical and internal wellness skincare? Can you have smooth, wrinkle free, blemish free, firm skin forever? Realistically it would be pretty much impossible, unless with some sort of futuristic surgical intervention. But if your skin is healthy and glowing, a few wrinkles and blemishes, even a bit of squish, I believe, can add life to your face, you’ve earnt those imperfections!!. Though of course I know, and me included, we all want to ward off any MORE imperfections from happening and maybe soften, firm and fade what we have a little with the help of great skincare.
I was watching a movie recently with Naomi Watts and I thought, she is in her 50’s, obviously doesn’t look her age, however she does have a lot of fine lines and wrinkles. Put her up against her counterparts that are nearly half her age with all the fillers, botox, and surgery, and then look at her with her natural, mature, healthy glowing skin, for me, that is so much more attractive. What do you think? Not to say she has never gone down the surgery path, who knows, and maybe she currently has injectables, but it’s certainly not blatantly obvious. I’d say she uses a great vitamin a product too, 😊 Maybe it’s an Osmosis One!??? I guess what I’m trying to say is that if your skin looks healthy and glowy, a few lines etc. will not detract from your face as much as you think they will. Use those actives on your skin for a vibrant complexion, including the very important vitamin a, especially once you have hit your 30’s.
Well I’m not going to give up my Osmosis MD Correct anytime soon, but I most definitely will interrupt my routine at some stage to try my daughter’s fave of all the vitamin a’s, the Aspect Dr Exfol A Plus. This has certainly done wonders for her complexion, and is our top selling retinol product. I can’t believe it, I have worked here for a few years now and have never tried it!”

Pip’s Vitamin A Product Review
“While I’m 100% aware of how important vitamin A is in my skincare routine, this summer I’ve really let things slide. I’ve focused on my family and neglected my skin, other than using SPF and washing my face… and now that my kids have started school again it’s time to get back into a routine. My skin is now dehydrated and red, and my fine lines have started to deepen. I’m going to explain where I plan to start with this vitamin a product review… I have two options that I’m tossing up, and I’ll explain why I’m considering them.
I’ve often found myself coming back to Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6. What I like about Medik8’s crystal retinal range is the balance between price and ingredients. I like that it’s retinal for a start, as it works faster than retinol, and doesn’t have the same skin irritation as the next strength up – retinoic acid. I find I can use it without having a strong reaction (slowly building up still) and I only use the mid-strength. It’s great that you can move-up strengths as your skin get’s used to it, and it’s not hard to work out what to move up to – even Crystal Retinal 20 is now available online! As my skin is also dehydrated after being neglected, I like that this formula also has hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, so it goes on smoothly like a cream and yet doesn’t feel greasy. It doesn’t replace your moisturiser, but it glides on sooo well. It also has anti-bacterial ingredients for acne, so while I’m stressed and breaking out it’s a gem.
Next is our clinic’s go-to for starting out with sensitive skin, and that’s Osmosis MD Calm. This is brilliant when your skin gets irritated, as its formula is packed with skin calming ingredients; reducing inflammation as well as promoting cell regeneration and healing. It also uses retinal, which I prefer, as well as seven non-irritating collagen and elastin stimulators as well as tripeptides to ‘smooth’ your wrinkles. When you’re combining red skin and ageing issues, then Osmosis MD Calm is such a great product.
I’m still 50/50 about which way I’ll go, but if my bank account will let me, I’ll likely go Osmosis MD Calm.”
