Pregnant Skin Care Routine

Pregnant Skin Care Routine

The hormonal changes we endure as a pregnant woman not only have us reaching for the ice cream tub, or crying at TV commercials, they also contribute to the many changes we see in our skin. For all panicking women out there, we can now confirm that your fluctuating hormones and increased blood flow, are most definitely the cause of your suddenly oily-but also dry, flushed, possibly blemished and maybe even newly pigmented skin. We’re taking you through our guide to a general pregnant skin care routine, so you can take the worry out of your skin changes.

The reason for this is, your body is now producing a lot more blood to support your growing little one. This dilates your blood vessels creating hot flushed skin, and also produces more sebum from your oil glands, which in turn produces nasty blocked pores, bacteria, inflammation and acne.

The skin also produces a lot more Melanin (which creates colour/tan in your skin) while your pregnant. This pigment isn’t always produced evenly, so you may notice some hormonal or pregnancy Hyper pigmentation, called Melasma.

Newly pregnant woman don’t be alarmed, the great news is, these skin concerns don’t happen to us all! We’ve seen a lot of women in clinic who’s skin has absolutely loved the pregnancy journey and their skin looks and feels plump, healthy and radiant. Especially women who suffer from a dryer skin in the past, they enjoy their new found radiance and glow. For the other pregnant women currently dealing with these concerns, please read on, we have the solutions for you with this pregnant skin care routine guide!

The handy part here is, a lot of these concerns can be treated with similar ingredients. As you may have already been advised, Retinol products (Vitamin A) isn’t recommended for use during pregnancy, and the same rule applies also for Glycolic acid. A great way to substitute these products, if you’re feeling lost without them, is to use Vitamin C, Peptides and Hyaluronic acid, as they all plump, brighten and treat the skin. When it comes to pregnancy skin care routine changes, keep in mind your skin may be more sensitive than normal, and you need to be gentle and patient. Often you skin improves following your pregnancy and breastfeeding hormones settling down.

With this is mind, we’ve created a list of our favourite (and most effective) products to use during this time:

Cleanse

Osmosis Purify Cleanser | This is a beautiful enzyme cleanser to ensure your pores are clear from any dirt grime, or excess sebum your oil glands have decided to produce. If your skin is a little sensitive, at the moment (also common during pregnancy) switch to the Gentle Cleanse.

Treat

Aspect Dr Multi B Plus | This is a potent Niacinamide serum. It’s wonderful at regulating oil supply, whilst also helping with hydration levels. Perfect for your combination/all over the place skin at the moment.

Societe Triple C | Triple C will give your skin a big hit of Vitamin C, creating bright, fresh, clear and even skin. Vitamin C is also wonderful for pigmented skin as it can help to fade and brighten any dark spots.

Medik8 Bakuchiol Peptides | This is a gentle, plant-derived retinol alternative infused with brightening peptide precursors. Ideal for those looking for a vitamin A substitute during their pregnancy and breastfeeding journey.

Medik8 Liquid Peptides | This is also a wonderful replacement for Retinol while pregnant. Brilliant for anti-aging, targeting fine lines and hydration, whilst elevating the skins natural hyaluronic acid levels.

Aspect Dr Hyaluronic serum | For those women dealing with dry, irritated, sore or inflamed skin, this will plump your skin almost instantly! Hyaluronic acid holds water in the skin, so your skin feels more hydrated and relieved of that ‘tight’ feeling.

Osmosis MD Boost | This is also a Peptide product. Sprayed onto your face following your serums, it will help them penetrate, while it soothes, hydrates, firms and nourishes. It’s actually wonderful for hot, flushing skin during the day, as you can spray this over makeup to cool and calm your skin during these moments.

Nourish

Aspect Dr Resveratrol | This is a brilliant Antioxidant moisturiser to feed your skin the hydration it’s looking for. It’s rich, luxurious and can be used morning and evening, your skin will absolutely eat it up! If your skin is excessively oily, Aspect Dr Ultra-light may suit better during the day, but this can still be used of an evening.

Protect

Sunblock | this is extremely important for those dealing with Hyperpigmentation. UV rays will only add to the colour and may also see more appear. We love CosMedix Hydrate + as it’s a moisturiser with zinc based sunblock added (it doesn’t leave the skin white like some zinc products do)

This is just to name a few. A huge majority of our products at The Skin Care Clinic are pregnancy and breastfeeding safe.
