Sometimes, it seems as though no matter what you do, your skin just looks a bit ‘blah’. You’re using good products, but you’re just not getting the results that you expected – especially when you have forked out hundreds of dollars on your skin care! Maybe your skin looks tired and dull, maybe the wrinkles are looking a little more pronounced – or perhaps you’re using an acne product but you’re still getting breakouts? Read this article on reasons your skincare isn’t working to find some good tricks and product swaps that you can do to get your skin looking and feeling better.
5 Reasons Your Skincare Isn’t Working
You’re using the wrong cleanser.
If you have oily skin, but you’re using an oil cleanser, then that’s just not going to work for you. If you have thicker skin, and you’re using a cream cleanser, this is also not the best choice. Maybe you have problematic skin prone to breakouts and you’re using an acid based cleanser – but you’re still getting breakouts – then you’re probably overdoing it with the strong cleanser.
Finding the right cleanser is super important. Switching to a different cleanser could make all the difference.
We recommend:
- DRY SKIN / REACTIVE SKIN – a cream cleanser or super gentle gel cleanser is best. We love Medik8 Calmwise Soothing Cleanser and Osmosis Cleanse
- ACNE SKIN – A gel cleanser that will not strip the protective barrier. We love Osmosis Purify with a twice weekly cleanse using Société AHA Exfoliating Cleanser
- THICK / OILY SKIN – Using a cleanser that will remove oils and dead skin buildup works best. And for this, you can’t go past Cosmedix Elite RX Clean
You’re not exfoliating.
So you’re using all these fantastic serums, but if you don’t regularly exfoliate, then they just can’t penetrate as deeply as they should. Weekly to twice weekly exfoliation ensures that you’re removing all the dead skin cells as well as product and make up residue. This leaves your skin looking fresher, clearer and more even toned and textured.
We love Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask which suits all skin types, especially those with sensitive skin. If you’re after a granulated exfoliator, we love Société micro Foaming Polish.
You’re not using a vitamin A.
One of the most important ingredients in skin care, vitamin A (retinol) resurfaces the skin by speeding up cell turnover. It is also the best ingredient for stimulating collagen production, meaning less fine lines. If you’re already using vitamin A, perhaps it’s time to move up to a higher level.
We love Osmosis Calm because it’s potent yet gentle, making it suitable for even rosacea sufferers. For a higher dose, we love Medik8 Crystal Retinol 20. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, Cosmedix Bakuchiol Complete is a perfect retinol alternative.
You’re using the wrong products for your skin type.
Maybe your best friend swears by a product but you just aren’t loving it as much as they do. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is a perfect example of this. Even though this is one of the best vitamin C products available, the oily texture means that if you suffer from acne, then it probably isn’t the best one for you. Knowing your skin type will help you choose the products best suited for you. We have a great product selection on our website for each skin care category. You can find that here.
You’re not protecting your skin.
You’ve heard it all before, but if you’re investing all this money in your skin care but you’re not using an SPF, then you just aren’t going to see the best results. Sun damage causes so much stress to the skin which presents in uneven skin tone and texture, pigmentation, wrinkles and dead skin build-up. So make sure you’re suing SPF every day – even in the cooler months.
We love Good Morning for SPF 50 coverage, and Cosmedix Hydrate + for a little less coverage, which is great to use when you’re mainly indoors, or its in the winter time.
