Exfoliation is an essential part of any skincare routine. By removing dead skin build-up, your skin will look and feel smoother, healthier and more even textured and is less likely to suffer from congestion, acne and enlarged pores. Weekly exfoliation is recommended, and depending on your skin, there is an exfoliator right for you.
Sensitive skins are best off with an enzyme exfoliator (non-granular), while thicker, congested skins, might prefer a manual exfoliant (granular). Acne on the back also improves with exfoliation, as does keratosis pilaris (rough bumps to the upper arms and sometimes legs).

Meg’s Product Review
“I am such a fan of exfoliating, and my skin really likes it when I exfoliate twice a week. I love the smooth feeling after a good exfoliation, and it also helps my other skin care products penetrate better. I use two types of exfoliators, manual and enzymatic, and alternate them through the week.
My favourite granular exfoliant of all time, and one that I use on my face and body is Aspect Illuminating Polish. This is a creamy, granular formula that has medium sized granules that slough away dead skin. It is super effective, non drying and the granules are gentle enough to use even when my skin is a little impaired from the sun. I also use this on my upper arms, where I can get a little bit of keratosis pilaris, which presents like tiny, dry bumps. I have also used this exfoliator on my daughters back when she was suffering back acne and it worked so well. If I had to choose only one exfoliator for the rest of my days, this one would be it.
The enzymatic exfoliator that I use is the Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask. Enzymes break larger molecules into smaller ones, and so this product really breaks down the glue like substance that sticks dead skin cells together. This is the exfoliator that I always recommend for anyone with sensitive skin, rosacea skin or young skin. Having said that, it still works an absolute treat on my old, thick skin, so I use this once a week as well. I might use this one on a Wednesday and the other one on a Sunday, for example. But I do have super thick skin that needs it.”

Pip’s Product Review
“I’m still using Aspect Illuminating Polish and Osmosis MD Polish. I keep Illuminating Polish in the shower, because my husband actually uses it and complains when it runs out. I’ve found this is the perfect combo of enough ‘scrub’ (eco-friendly of course) for non-skincare users to feel like it’s doing something, and enough enzymes and AHA’s to actually leave your skin silky smooth.
Next to it, is my sneaky wonder-mask Osmosis MD Polish, this is an enzyme exfoliator with a bit of L-lactic acid. I use it once a week and it leaves my skin super-soft. You do need to leave it on for 5-15 minutes, I’m on the 5 minute side with my red-cheeks, but I’m sure many could leave on for the 15 minutes.
What’s my verdict? If you aren’t a ‘skincare’ person, leave the Aspect Illuminating Polish in your shower and you won’t be disappointed. I’ve given to a few friends who aren’t big on skincare, and they’ve all asked for more. Whereas, if you’re a skincare lover, I’m sure you’ll become obsessed with Osmosis MD Polish. Why one over the other? Price of course!”

Zoe’s Product Review
“The Ultra Smoothing Facial Exfoliant by Dermalist has very fine, gritty pieces that give a nice even scrub, however I personally can’t use this product too often, and leave it for more of an occasional treatment when I notice my skin is needing an extra good scrub. This is because of how granular it is, and my skin can be quite sensitive to certain products.
These ‘gritty pieces’ are a combination of multi-sized, environmentally friendly exfoliating beads. Mixed with seven powerful active, yet gentle ingredients and Pomegranate enzyme that work to remove dull, dead skin cells, shrink pore size, smooth and soften the skin.Let’s talk about some key ingredients;
- Lactic Acid (AHA) for exfoliation and deep moisture
- Mandelic Acid (AHA) for exfoliation and age reversal
- Citric Acid (AHA) for exfoliation and pigmentation corrector
- Biodegradable beads for deep exfoliation
All in all, the Ultra Smoothing Facial Exfoliant is a unique chemical, physical and enzymatic exfoliant that is perfect for a more intense scrub. I recommend to rub gently onto the face, or just leave it to sit on the skin to work it’s magic! This still doesn’t compare to my all time favourite… Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask. I have already reviewed this product so I won’t go into ALL the details, however I love that I can really feel the dead skin shedding off my face the more I rub into my skin, with it being an extremely gentle enzyme mask making it perfect for all skin conditions!”Zoe
Nidia’s Product Review
“With dry, sensitive skin, I need to be careful with the type of exfoliator I use. I initially thought the CosMedix Detox Activated Charcoal Mask might be a bit harsh for me, but I was completely wrong! This mask was so lovely to use. It is very gentle, but still so effective – my skin was brighter and clearer without losing any hydration.
Here’s how it works: the porous activated charcoal draws out toxins and clears congested pores, while Kaolin clay absorbs excess oil and Diatomaceous Earth gently exfoliates. This unique combination makes this mask the perfect detoxing exfoliator for any skin, but especially for sensitive skin. Pair with a rich, hydrating night cream (Aspect Super Moisturising Complex and Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 are faves) afterwards and you’ll wake up looking radiant!”
