Makeup Review

Makeup has existed since at least as far back as Egyptian times, as has the use of skincare. In truth, the two go hand-in-hand. Skincare is used to improve your skin’s function, texture and appearance – whereas makeup enhances it. While it’s okay to say this, in truth you want your makeup to provide more than just enhancement. You want your makeup to be non-comedogenic, so that it won’t clog your pores and undo all your hard work. You also don’t want to harm your skin with ingredients that cause irritation over time. Not only this, but you can often find makeup options now that offer multiple benefits. From extra sun protection, to hydration and even added anti-ageing properties. It can get mighty confusing, which is why we have our makeup review this week.

Now, we don’t push for our clients to wear makeup, but it can improve your confidence. We also don’t want you to undo all your hard work, by exacerbating any issues you’ve been trying to improve, by using makeup brands that clog your pores and cause inflammatory responses. With this in mind, we’ve selected a few ranges of makeup that we’re proud to stock on our website. Our main focus with our makeup is providing foundation and concealer options – as colour is based on seasonal trends rather than a part of your basic routine. So, with multiple options available, what do we use ourselves? Check out our makeup reviews below to see what products we use and like.

It was a sad day for me when I heard that we can no longer stock ColoreScience. I love so many of their products, particularly the Total Eye and the Sunforgettable Face Brush. It was the perfect amount of coverage with SPF, so yeah, I am sad about that.

Luckily my friends at Aspect have created a mineral range, which I have switched to, and are really enjoying. I don’t wear foundation much, but when I do, I just like it to be non-oily, light coverage and one that blends well.

So I’ve been using the Aspect Loose mineral Powder in the colour 5 (I have tanned skin with a yellow undertone). I like the feel of it. It doesn’t rub off onto clothes or pillows or the couch when I’m having a little nap and it looks very natural. I just use a big round brush to apply it and it stays on all day. You can build it up for a deeper coverage, but I just like it for offering a light, even tone.

If you listen to makeup artists, they say that women over a certain age shouldn’t use a powder as it highlights the wrinkles, but I just don’t like the feel of a liquid – it always makes me feel like I need to wash it off as soon as I get home – it feels suffocating in a way. But with a powder, I can leave it on all day without that feeling.

Do I like it better than the ColoreScience one? Yes, but I liked the fact that the ColoreScience had SPF in it. Other than that, I think that it is just as good, if not better!

Julie’s Makeup Review

Julie Product Review

When Osmosis discontinued their CC Cream, home was not a happy place for my husband for a while. What on earth was I going to do? I have mentioned in other reviews, I simply cannot wear normal liquid foundations or powders. I have never been able to, it never looked right, I just really like a more minimal coverage, natural look. I remember my wedding makeup consisted of one coat of mascara and a smudge of blush, seriously, no foundation, no concealer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, bronzer, not even lipstick!! It was in the dark ages, so it was well before tinted moisturisers, cc creams and bb creams. And of course, you married young in those days, so I was at an age when there wasn’t much to disguise on my skin anyway. But years later once those magical products became available, and my skin was starting to show some wear and tear (so to speak) I immediately jumped on the cc cream bandwagon and became addicted, and subsequently never left home without it being applied..

Back to the dilemma of replacing the discontinued cc cream. After a lot of angst and experimenting, I love my new cocktail of products. I know many of you out there don’t like or want the bother of mixing products together, but honestly it takes two seconds, and you can achieve your desired result. I mix Aspect Sun CC Cream and the Jane Iredale Dream Tint tinted moisturiser together, about equal parts, and have found this to work perfectly for me. I found the creams were quite opposite to each other, one was quite matte and had a light consistency, the other glossy and a denser consistency, and for my skin, neither quite right on their own, but together, spot on. So it’s a happy household at the moment.. Oh!! And if ever my skin is feeling on the dry side, I will add in a drop of the Cosmedix Brilliancy Vitamin C Brightening Facial Oil or some extra sunscreen, my favourite at the moment being the Skinceuticals Ultra Facial Defense. Don’t be scared to mix products together, it’s actually quite fun, but of course stick to the products you have used before if you have reactive or sensitive skin.

I really, really want to mention in this review, so I will, the Fyne Eyelash Enhancing Serum. Wow! I began using this serum not only on my lashes but my brows as well. My more mature sisters out there will know your eyebrows become lighter and lighter, both in colour and density, as every year passes, and your eyelashes that were once long, dark and luxurious are now sparse and well… not luxurious. But just two weeks after applying this serum, only once a day, I could see my eyebrows had thickened up and looked so much darker, and the same happened to my lashes!! I am so impressed, I wonder what they will be like after another few weeks?

This will be forever in my bathroom.

Phillipa’s Makeup Review

“Anyone who knows me, knows I’m not a ‘makeup person.’ But, also that I have rosy cheeks with broken capillaries and splotchy freckles/Melasma. I only wear makeup when I’m heading into work or an event… I mostly work from home and hang out with family. When I do wear foundation, I like it to feel more like my moisturiser, and to blend in easily. Also, I prefer it to be sheer with the option to build it up for more coverage depending on what I’m doing. That way I don’t look or feel like I’m wearing a thick layer on my face – which is my memory of makeup as a teen.

Now that I’ve explained what I like and why, what do I choose to use? Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals. This feels more like a serum with pigment, rather than a thick foundation. It includes hyaluronic acid to plump your skin, and vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10 for added antioxidant protection. I also find that I can layer up the coverage, so it can be sheer or medium coverage depending on how many layers I add. The only down side is that there’s not added SPF, so I still have another layer to add.

“I had high hopes for the FYNE Eyelash Enhancing Serum, but I was not expecting it to work so quickly! Within two weeks of use my eyelashes are noticeably thicker and longer. I can see and feel the difference! It’s a game changer.

The serum is so quick and easy to apply, it barely made any difference to my evening routine. One quick stroke across each eyelid and I’m done. The only hard thing was remembering not to rub my eyes soon after application!

On top of all that, it’s a completely natural formula full of vitamins, minerals and peptides to nourish and strengthen your eyelashes. I’m so happy with the results so far, I can’t wait to see what they look like at 3 months! I also just found out I can use it on my eyebrows. Cannot. Wait.”

I absolutely LOVE my Osmosis Kabuki brush!

Traditionally, I thought these brushes were used for powder foundations, bronzers etc, but this works beautifully to buff and dapple liquid foundation into the skin.  With its soft bristles that come together to form a dense dome, the Kabuki brush blends the foundation perfectly into the skin, spreads evenly without making your foundation cakey, giving you a flawless complexion.

I personally much rather applying my foundation with my Kabuki brush, I find that when using a Beauty Blender, the sponge absorbs your foundation leading in product wastage. If you haven’t tried using a Kabuki brush for your foundation, I seriously suggest it! 😊
