Dark Skin Hormonal Acne – Common Q&A

Diet has a strong correlation with hormonal acne and so it’s important to consider your diet. Eating less processed foods and sugars. Instead basing your daily staples on fresh veggies and fruit and ensuring you’re eating sufficient protein. Often students cannot afford red meat and good quality fish and so reply on pasta, rice and bread to fill them up. Revamp how you eat and budget for your skin.

Stress also affects hormones. Not just the stress from study and probably part time work, but from being time poor. Being in a new country plus new foods, different water and a different climate. These will all affect your skin.

Common Questions Dark Skin Acne

I have breakouts all along my jawline, my throat and all over my chin.  This has become worse since I moved to Australia from Indonesia last year to study. It is worse before my period and around a week after I’ve eaten fried food, dairy, and sugars. I’ve tried some supermarket skin care products but they haven’t helped.  In fact, they made my skin red and sore. What should I do?

Susie | VIC | Age 22

  • Susie definitely has hormones affecting her skin.  Hormonal acne usually shows up along the jawline and chin area, often associated with congestion including blackheads and whiteheads. The skin looks dirty and feels bumpy when you run your fingers over it in these areas. Often the rest of the face is clear.

Her skin probably feels oily however is most likely dry deep down, caused by the effects of this stress so this is where skin care needs to start. An appropriate, non harsh cleanser, some Vitamins A, B and C and a UV protector moisturiser will do the trick to begin with.

The Aspect Dr ABC kit is a perfect choice with a weekly mask, Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask, to work on clearing out the pores. Of course, sun protection in Australia is vital, so Aspect Dry Touch SPF moisturiser every day.

And to change her diet. She may experience a good old purge as toxins are expelled and pores cleaned out, but this will pass. If she can afford a Probiotic I suggest the Miessence Superfoods daily. She needs to ensure she is drinking 2 litres of water every day.

As she settles more into her lifestyle her skin will change acclimatising. Unfortunately, then when she visits home the reaction of her skin is unknown. It may be a positive or a negative change. She will need to be ready for this and adjust her skin care accordingly.
