Young, healthy skin holds water well, but from around age 25, the skin begins to lose its ability to retain it, showing signs of dehydrated skin, and with this its ability to function well. Our skin is such a complex organ, continuing to work even when missing essential nutrients, that we often don’t notice until almost too late that it is suffering. It’s when we look in the mirror that we notice the increased fine lines, a tired reflection, possibly a few breakouts and skin that often feels irritable, tight and dry. We are dehydrated!
As you can read about in one of our lead articles, dry and dehydrated skin is far more prevalent during the colder months – the heaters are on, the humidity in the air is lower and we’re less inclined to drink water. So, tweaking your skin care regime just a little can make all the difference to how your skin looks, feels and functions. We are lucky that modern skin care offers us the ability to help our skin and especially to improve our water retention and combat dehydration.
Certain ingredients added to products for dehydrated skin can really make a significant difference to the health of our skin, whatever age we are:
- Fatty acids
- Hyaluronic acid
- Growth factors, Peptides and Stemcells
- Resveratrol antioxidant
We have gathered together a few of our favourite products containing these ingredients just for you!
Best Ingredients for Dehydrated Skin Products:
Hyaluronic Acid
A powerful humectant that naturally occurs in the human body. It is used in cosmetics because of its ability to bind moisture to itself; in fact 1000 times its own weight! This aids in improving the hydration of the skin, keeping it plump, firm and looking younger. It is an incredibly effective antioxidant that can be used on any skin type, including very sensitive and inflamed skin as it’s extremely calming and soothing. Even oily acne skins that are dehydrated will benefit – it is often used as a moisturiser for these skin types. Makeup also sits better and lasts longer when applied over a Hyaluronic serum. Our best selling option is Aspect Dr Hyaluronic Serum – use it morning and night before you moisturiser and feel the difference in your skin!
Resveratrol – moisturiser for dehydrated skin
A very potent antioxidant that is found in the skin of grapes, more so in red grapes (hence why red wine is so good for you! In small doses…). It is a polyphenol antioxidant produced by plants to protect them against UV’s, infections and the weather and these attributes transfer to our skin!
But what exactly do antioxidants do? Antioxidants are nutrients and enzymes that aid in preventing and repairing damage to the body’s tissues and cells. They do this by blocking the process of oxidation (think of when an apple goes brown) that is caused by free radicals. As our body is constantly exposed to free radicals, we are always fighting the oxidation process, which means that replenishing our antioxidants is a must. Resveratrol acts by protecting the skin’s cells from the inside out, leading to better functioning and healthier cells.
Our best moisturiser for dehydrated skin Aspect Dr Resveratrol, is our best selling also – and it’s for a very good reason! When Resveratrol is applied to the skin in a cream or serum it improves water retention and, thereby, hydration. This results in:
- Fewer, better looking wrinkles
- Increased suppleness and flexibility
- Decreased age spots
Resveratrol is sufficiently light for acne skin and sufficiently effective for ageing, dehydrated skin.
Growth Factors and Peptides for Dehydrated Skin
Proteins that regulate cellular growth, proliferation and differentiation. They stimulate the healthy cells where needed in the skin, playing a crucial role in the maintenance of healthy structure and function. They stimulate pathways to promote skin cell repair and regeneration, which also promotes collagen and elastin formation deep in the skin. As we age, the body is programmed to decrease the rate and amount of all of these processes, so Growth Factors will help to keep you young, as well as hydrated.
Growth Factors are relatively new to cosmeceuticals and are absolutely essential to anyone who wants to change their skin, especially those with problem skin, such as acne, dehydration and any of the ageing concerns. We have two great products to get you started, Osmosis MD Rescue is a serum suitable for all skin types and it gives your skin a huge boost. We also love Aspect Super Moisturising Complex, a moisturiser with a rich luxurious feel for those suffering dry and tight skin.
Stem Cells for Repair and Replenishment
They can repair every type of cell in the body. When your skin is dehydrated then you will often have a sluggish regenerative process occurring in your skin. The highly recommended Osmosis MD StemFactor is a stem cell product specifically formulated for dehydrated skins. This product is always effective, however works best when combined with the Growth Factors in their Rescue Serum. Often only 1 or 2 bottles are required to get your skin back on track after suffering from dehydration.
Fatty Acids for Dehydrated Skin
Essential for healthy, well-functioning cell membranes. They are polyunsaturated fats that assist in the creation of the skin’s natural oil barrier. Your skin will be:
- Hydrated
- Plumper
- Younger-looking
- Not sore or irritated
NOTE: It is helpful for you to regularly include Omega-3s and Omega-6s in your diet, such as salmon, flax and sunflower oils, walnuts and soy. However, applying fatty acids topically to your skin is optimal if your skin is irritated in any way.
Fatty acids are suitable for all skins that are dehydrated and inflamed, including those with concerns such as acne, rosacea and ageing. We particularly promote Osmosis MD Immerse as being a luxurious serum for dehydrated skin. Lathering your skin in moisture, it’s both amazing for your face and also your neck and décolletage. Used morning and evening initially you will eventually be able to reduce to just once each day. Leaving you feeling more hydrated than before.
