Healthy skin does not happen overnight. A consistent skin care routine is essential to optimise your skin health, fortify its defences and maximise your results. To enhance your knowledge, we have compiled these skincare basics. Including the typical steps in your daily skincare routine, as well as recommendations that are specific to your skin type and concerns.
Skincare Basics – Easy To Follow Steps
Apply your skin care products in the following order, for best results
- Cleanse
- Exfoliate
- Tone or mist
- Treat with serums (water based then oil based)
- Moisturise
- Eye Cream
- SPF
- Body Care
Cleanse – morning and night
A thorough cleanse clears your skin of oil and debris that can lead to clogged pores and dull skin. Cleansing also prepares your skin for further treatment, allowing for optimal absorption. You can choose a cleanser based on your skin condition.
- Oily skin is best with a gel cleanser
- Dry and sensitive skin is better with a cream or oil cleanser
- Cystic acne skin may require a salicylic cleanser
We love Osmosis MD Purify and CosMedix Purity Solution
Tone or Mist – morning and night
Although not essential, toning completes the cleansing process by conditioning your skin and adding beneficial vitamins and minerals. Unlike alcohol based toners of the past, todays toners and mists support the effectiveness of your cleanser by adding replenishing ingredients that support your skin’s health. Cleansing and toning work together like shampoo and conditioner!
We love Medik8 Press and Glow and Société Conditioning Prep Solution
Exfoliate – once to twice per week
Exfoliating is essential to encourage healthy skin cell turnover, eliminate dead skin build-up and relieve pore congestion. You can choose an enzymatic exfoliant (best for dry, sensitive skins) or a physical exfoliant (good for those with thicker, dull skin)
We love Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask and SkinCeuticals Micro Exfoliating Scrub
Treat with Serums – morning and night
Your daily routine should include a serum. These are potent formulas that contain concentrated amounts of active ingredients to target concerns and neutralise the effects of environmental stressors. The serum you choose should address your concerns, but vitamin A (at night – not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding) and vitamin C (in the morning) are considered an essential part of a skin care routine.
We love Dermalist All Serum and Dermalist Defy as all-in-one serums
Moisturise – morning and night
Used daily, moisturisers keep skin soft, supple and protected. Moisturising not only targets and treats specific issues in the top layers of the skin, it also provides necessarily support for the skins natural lipid barrier. A strong and healthy barrier enables the skin to better retain moisture and repel external irritants. Even oily skin needs moisture and hydration!
We love Aspect Dr Resveratrol and SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore
Eye Cream – morning and night
The skin around the eye area is seven times thinner than the rest of your face and needs to be treated with special care. Regular eye cream application not only maintains the health, thickness and elasticity of this delicate area, it also reduces the look of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness.
We love CosMedix Elite Eye Doctor and Medik8 C Tetra Eye
SPF – daily or as required – definite skincare basics
The final and most crucial step in every skin care routine is sun protection. Daily and consistent sunscreen use helps protect the skin against damaging rays that contribute to skin irritation, premature ageing, dull skin and the formation of certain skin cancers.
We love Aspect Dr Hydra shield and Aspect Hydrating Face SPF 50
Lips – morning and night
Caring for your lips will keep them plump and hydrated and help to avoid conditions like cracked lips, sunburn and loss of volume (to a degree).
We love Aspect Hydrating Lip Balm, We Are Feel Good SPF 50 Lip Balm and PCA Hyaluronic Acid Lip Booster
Body Care – daily or as required
Skin doesn’t end at your décolleté. The rest of your body can also display areas of concerns. Extend your skin care routine by applying nutrient rich body products that keep your skin looking healthy from head to toe!
We love PCA Skin Perfecting Neck and Décolleté and We Are Feel Good Kakadu Plum Body Milk
Self Tan – as required
With the weather warming up and more skin on display, you might want to give yourself a golden glow with a self tanner. We always recommend using products that are chemical free and so we only stock self tans that offer great colour, application and are gentle on the skin.
We love Three Warriors Gradual Tan and Three Warriors Face Tan Aqua Mist
Internal Health
It is true that healthy skin starts from within. Most skin issues can be linked to poor gut health or intolerances to certain foods. Taking a supplement that can heal the body is a great way to maximise your skin health.
We love Kissed Earth Balance and Osmosis Wellness Skin Clarifier
