Best Skin Tips (that are not necessarily skin care)

Best Skin Tips

We write a lot of articles here at The Skin Care Clinic, and they always relate to products that you can purchase to enhance your skin. But not everyone can or wants to purchase lots of products. So I thought that I would give you some tips on getting the healthiest skin you can without adding anything to your cart!

Tip 1: Wash your face morning and night.

Best Skin Tips Cleanse

Even on the days that you have been makeup free. Cleansing not only removes the grime from pollution and any makeup, but it also removes dead skin cells that build up throughout the day. When dead skin builds up your skin can look tired and dull. Using a good cleanser will work well. If you have a child, washing their face each night with a warm face washer not only removes dirt, but also gets them into a good routine early on.

Tip 2: Stop picking.

Best Skin Tips

If you have pimples or blackheads, picking will only make them worse. Not only will it spread bacteria, it will also create inflammation, causing scarring. If you have to pick (because you have a massive pimple that has come to a head) apply a warm compress to soften the skin and gently squeeze. Cleanse immediately after.

If you have to push more than 3 times to get anything out – it’s not ready! Leave it alone!

Tip 3: Get off the sugar!

Best Skin Tips Sugar

I recently wrote an article about quitting sugar and processed foods and what it did for my skin. Not only did it work wonders for my skin (it was brighter, smoother and my melasma decreased) but I also slept better, my memory improved significantly and the whites of my eyes got even whiter!!!

Tip 4: Cleanliness!

Best Skin Tips

Bacteria and other yucky stuff can live in your linen and on other surfaces. Change your pillow cases regularly, especially if you have acne!

Wipe your mobile phone clean at the end of each day and clean any over-ear headphones. Keep your hands clean and try not to touch your face too often. And the most important one: CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES!!

Tip 5: Hair Care.

Best Skin Tips Hair

If you have a fringe and you get forehead pimples or congestion, then your hair could be the culprit. Also, products such as dry shampoo can make their way down onto your face leaving toxic chemicals on your skin. Oily hair can also result in pimples, so keep your hair clean, free from chemicals and tie it back where you can.

Tip 6: Less is often more.

Best Skin Tips Products

Using too many products can often cause irritation. Especially if you are using cheap at home treatments. A lot of my clients, especially the teenage acne clients that I have, admit to using as many as 10 masks in a week. And not good ones either – usually the $2 packet ones you can purchase from discount pharmacies!! They might promise clear skin, but deliver the exact opposite.

Same goes for over exfoliation. Once or twice a week is all you need.

Tip 7: Get enough sleep!

Best Skin Tips

We have some great information on Beauty Sleep and the fact that it is not a myth. Sleep is when all the repairing to the human body is done. Including our skin. While apps like Netflix and Stan have been life changing for our down time, they certainly have done nothing for our beauty sleep. One more episode……? OK.

Tip 8: Weekly treatments.

Best Skin Tips

These certainly are a great way to not only relax and take some time to indulge yourself, but they can also significantly boost your current skin care routine. My favourite thing to do at the end of the week is to soak in the bath with my ipad and sheet mask on. Such luxury.

Tip 9: Face steams.

Best Skin Tips Steam

I love a good steam. It softens the skin and opens those pores so that you can clear them out before applying serums. We are lucky to have a professional steamer that we can lay under here in the clinic, but a basin of boiling water works just as well. Fill it up with boiling water out of the kettle and hover your face over the basin with a towel over your head. Old school I know, but it works. If you have one of those Vicks Humidifiers lying around (parents whose kids have suffered croupe will know what these are) then these make perfect steamers. A weekly steam will do wonders for your skin. But careful! Steam can cause third degree burns, so don’t get too close.

Tip 10: Protect your skin.

Best Skin Tips SPF

It would be irresponsible of me not to mention sun block, so here it is. Use one. Every single day. I promise that if you do, you will knock 10 years off your face instead of life. 60? Oh, I thought you were 50!
