Oh, you may have a lip balm lying around, or a lipstick that matches your favourite outfit. Do you give them the thanks that they deserve though, beyond lathering them in balm when you catch a cold? Check out our Best Lip Care Product Review and get some inspiration. Have fun focusing on your lips for a change!
What’s with your lips anyway?
The natural colour of your lips is caused by having such a thin layer of skin. While your face contains up to 16 layers, your lips have only up to 5. So few, that you can see the blood flowing below, giving them a rosy glow. They also contain collagen, and like much of your face, it’s what gives them shape. Healthy lips are often considered “plump”. Unfortunately, like your face, the Collagen decreases with age and Sun damage. Frustrating hey! They also don’t contain sweat glands to keep them moisturised. They’re on their own, and while your saliva moistens them in the short term, long term it actually dries them out. This is why licking your lips is such a damaging habit.
As your lip area is so delicate, it’s also known to show your age. Let’s face it, they’re always moving, or being exposed to the environment in some way. That’s why one of the best things you can do for your lips is keep them moist. A part of this is exfoliation. Making sure you’re keeping the live skin cells moist, not the flaky dead cells. Of course, we have a whole bundle of options for you lips. So sit back, apply your lip balm, and consider what your next treat may be!
Meg’s Best Lip Care Product Review
“I always have dry lips and cannot brush my teeth without having to apply a lip balm straight away. I use two different ones, depending on the day!
Aspect Hydrating Lip Balm
Full of Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil, this is super moisturising without feeling thick and pasty and it lasts the whole day. The only thing I wish it contained is an SPF as I’ve had sunburnt lips before and it was the worst.
Jane Iredale Lip Drink in Flirt or Crush
These lip drinks are the best! Full of oils and waxes AND a broad spectrum 15+. These lip balms feel amazing and come in great colours, my favourite being CRUSH but I also wear FLIRT a lot too!
They taste and smell a little lemony because of the essential oils, which is lovely!”

Julie’s Best Lip Care Product Review
“I cannot remember a time where I haven’t needed to use some sort of lip balm/treatment on my lips. As soon as I’ve brushed my teeth, I have to apply something to avoid that feeling of a desert stranding. It hasn’t been quite as bad in recent months, and I put that down to increasing my water intake from what an ant would drink, to a normal human being…. sooo naughty.
What do I use? To be honest, I use whatever’s in easiest reach, and it doesn’t have to be specifically for lips. For example, I recently started using Cosmedix Rescue mainly to see what all the hype was about, everyone who uses it seems to rave about it. I wasn’t expecting it to be as dense as it is, even though it is called a balm, dah! Apparently it’s gentle enough to use on baby’s skin for nappy rash, aids in calming sunburn, skin inflammation etc., so I thought hey, this would probably be great for lips, and it is! It keeps them super soft and hydrated for ages.
I also love to use the Jane Iredale Sugar&Butter Lip Exfoliation/Plumper if it’s within arm’s reach. It has the exfoliator one end and the plumper/moisturiser/colour on the other. I do have to make sure my lips are a little moist before I apply the exfoliator, otherwise it feels way too harsh on my dry old lips. Then to the other end for a tinge of colour and bit of plumping. Not sure if I actually get any plumping done, but I like the way it feels, we’ll talk about colour later..
Another idea, I quite often use, is popping on my lips whatever eye cream/serum I’m using at the time.
Especially if it’s Cosmedix Opti Crystal, love it! …mmm, what else do I use?.. Oh yeah, in the car I have a Colorescience Lip Shine which is great because it contains SPF, and I can add a quick gloss to my lips before getting out of the car, which usually lasts about, oh I don’t know, maybe, two, three minutes, tops. I don’t understand, everyone else seems to be able to keep lip gloss/lipstick on forever, but I have never been able to, ever. It’s like, put it on, walk ten metres and seeya! So frustrating. I’m sure our gorgeous makeup artist/skin care advisor, Meagan, could actually give me a few ideas on how to keep it lasting a little longer, you’d think I would have asked her by now, but because I gave up trying to wear it (lipstick) years ago, I just never think about it.
Anyhow a product, specifically for lips, that I’m really looking forward to trying is Medik8 Mutiny. We’ve heard a lot of good things about it, so I’m excited to try.
I’ll let you know what I think :)”

Phillipa’s Best Lip Care Product Review
“I’m a sucker for lip products. I have naturally plump lips and as I often find myself breathing through my mouth, they get dry easily. I’d love to say I adore colourful lipstick, but honestly, my lips look terrible with too much colour. Rather than being soft and pouty, they just end taking over my face. I don’t have a well defined bow, so they’re just a blob on my face… maybe it’s just in my head! lol.
Anyway, I actually have to put some effort in to keep them soft. I love lip balms, and have waaay more than I could use at any one time. I’m still loving Jane Iredale’s Lip Drink in flirt as my fav’, as it’s awesome having that touch of colour.
Unfortunately, during Covid I left my Triple Luxe Lipstick in the car, and forgot. Let’s face it, my car hasn’t seen much use this year. My lipstick is now a melted blob in the lid. Arg!!! Anyway it was a great excuse to upgrade to the Lip Plumper in LA, which I absolutely adore. It’s sheer but with enough colour to make me feel special! Tingling on my lips, and giving a subtle shine, as though I’ve just licked my lips.
I’ve also recently added the Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator and Plumper. I was trying to find ways to “treat myself” without leaving the house. This is definitely awesome. I’m a bit addicted to it actually. I don’t leave it out in the bathroom though, because my kids kept asking to play with it, as it looks pretty. I retrieve it from it’s hidden lair and pop it on before I jump in the shower, and then after. That way what they don’t see, they don’t want!
I must say I’m curious to try the new Medik8 Mutiny lip balm – oh and the CosMedix Lumi Crystal!! OMG it looks divine!”
