Have you ever wondered if you should be adding in a toner and mist into your skincare routine? What’s the added benefit and which one should you be looking at? Gone are the days when you are supposed to cleanse, tone and moisturise as a general rule. With your old trusty toner being a strong alcohol base that strips your skin – check out our article on toners for the updated version. Now, a toner is optional and has lots of different added benefits, depending on what your skin needs. For some, a mist is far more beneficial than a toner. We’ve reviewed the toners and mists that we’re using at the moment to give you an idea of what you can use and when depending on your skin type.
Toner and mist use according to your skin type
- As a general rule if you have oily/congested skin then your toner will assist decongesting your pores. You use it after cleansing and before your serums.
- If you have ageing skin (or normal), then your toner will give added exfoliation, allowing your serums to work better and assist with hydration. You use it after cleansing and before your serums.
- Sensitive or irritated skin more often needs mists, that allow antioxidants and other calming ingredients to be applied without rubbing against your skin. You use it just before or after your serums to help them absorb, and during the day as needed.
Meg’s Product Review
“Our recent article on toners got me thinking about the one that I have been using, and how I haven’t given it enough praise! I was not really a fan of toners until we started stocking more of them in the clinic and I became aware of their multifunctional benefits. Gone are the days when toners only stripped your skin of all its natural oils, you can now get toners that will hydrate, decongest, remove oil, add antioxidants and assist in breaking down pigment. And it is the latter that I am really benefiting from with my review of Medik8 Press & Glow.
What is it?
This hydrating PHA toner provides an everyday exfoliating solution without any stingy, stinky or drying effects. This is a powerful acid toner that is great for even sensitive skin and even boosts your Vitamin A & C results. This toner works using a high performing polyhydroxy acid that both resurfaces your skin and breaks down stubborn pigmentation, leaving you with a smoother and brighter complexion. Not only that, but it acts as a moisture magnet, which leaves you with a naturally stronger skin barrier.
How to use it:
Apply this after cleansing with a cotton pad and swipe over your face. It will last you a really long time, as the dispenser only allows exactly the amount you need.
The effects:
I’ve noticed that my skin is much less congested (I have large pores) and together with my Complete Pigment Serum that I’ve been using, the pigmentation that I have is really starting to dramatically shift. I also love the feel of this on my skin after application. It feels really clean, but not dry. Love it!”

“When I was introduced to the Osmosis MD Boost and began to use it, I never really expected to see results or feel any effects this peptide mist may have on my serums and in turn my skin, but I have to say, I was wrong, because I did see and feel a real difference. It had all sounded a bit airy fairy to me, harmonized waters?! Was I going to be able to hear the Bee Gees Massachusetts with every squirt?? I had been layering two to three different Osmosis MD serums for a few months and had seen some genuine changes in my skin, but once I started to mist on this peptide activating spray after my serum application, there was an instant feeling that my skin was absorbing those serums so much more, and the mornings after I could see such a difference in my skin’s hydration, I was not looking so much like a jaundiced roadmap.
It particularly helped with Osmosis MD Catalyst AC11. If you have ever used the Catalyst AC11 serum, you know how rich and dark it is, and how it will often leave an orangey residue on your skin, (hence the jaundiced look), but I have found spraying a little on my hand into the serum and then another spritz once applied, no more orange residue or rusty looking pillow cases in the morning.
Improved serum absorption, increased hydration, and delivery of peptides and antioxidants, what’s not to love?
Osmosis MD Boost gets a 10 out of 10 from me, even without the Bee Gees harmonies.”

Phillipa’s Product Review
“I was determined to try a toner this review, but I’ve ended up being drawn to the mists. My red cheeks have been flaring up recently because of the Winter weather, so I’ve been trying the SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective range… and I must admit they’re nice! The whole range gave me that cooling vibe, much like popping on Aloe Vera, but with a more cucumber and herb scent. The mist I’m reviewing today is actually incredibly light. It says to hold it further away, but I ended up holding it close to my skin as the spray is sooo fine I couldn’t feel it as well otherwise. I found the mist was really nice during the day, as the serum was enough after cleansing and the mask was great initially getting my skin on track. I was really happy using all three of these products, particularly being drawn to the mask and serum.
Prior to this I’ve been using CosMedix Benefit Balance after my serums. I found this mist worked really well to help my serums absorb. Benefit Balance is particularly awesome in the morning just after cleansing (I keep forgetting in the evening), as it has the added benefit of being an antioxidant infused toner with lactic acid and witch hazel, as well as green tea, aloe and chamomile. There’s something about this mist that I really liked, as though I was more hydrated and soft. I did trial the Medik8 Press and Glow, but I’ll admit I still fell back to the Benefit Balance, there’s just something about mists that I prefer. I think wiping the toner over my red skin doesn’t appeal, even though it felt okay, it just didn’t feel hydrating and gentle in the same way.
Once again, I have been trialling different mists over the past 6 months. Over summer I used Osmosis MD Boost. This is another antioxidant infused mist that is brilliant when your skin barrier is compromised. It’s designed to improve your serum use, but also hydrates, heals and soothes your skin.
I think my favourite is between Benefit Balance and Boost, both having that mixture of hydrating and making my skin feel soft.”

Zoe’s Product Review
“Osmosis MD Infuse enhances product penetration whilst infusing your skin with plant-based minerals that work to purify and nourish the complexion, ensuring you are getting the most out of your skincare products. This natural face toner contains fulvic and humic acids that help support all cellular function for a better immune and repair system.
Not only does this toning mist enhance product penetration, but it purifies pores and promotes a healthy epidermis!
How To Use:
After serum application, spritz 3-5 times either directly onto the face, or into your hand to mix with your serum, to then apply a less tacky and smooth serum that will penetrate the deeper layers of your skin. Perfect for all skin types!
Useful Tip:
Use for relief after waxing to repair the irritated skin in that area.
This product is perfect to use in conjunction with the Osmosis MD Catalyst AC-11, this serum is quite thick and can have a tacky feel, applying the Infuse also, will help the serum glide onto the skin and
feel less sticky.”Zoe
