My daughter has acne on her face, and it makes her very self-conscious. She has started wanting to wear makeup to hide it. I want her to feel comfortable around her friends, but I don’t want her to make the acne worse – or to look really ‘made up’ with thick makeup – which it ends up being after she’s covered her acne up? How can I help her?

- It’s not uncommon to be faced with both wanting to heal your acne and also cover it up. Covering your acne with makeup doesn’t have to make the acne worse – but you need to be careful what type of makeup you use (non-comedogenic), and ensure you are cleaning your face morning and night properly – with products that gently clean and yet don’t hurt the skin even more and leave it dehydrated. Another unspoken issue with acne in teenagers, is that they often hate to wear sunscreen as it ‘feels greasy’… and this is vital to their long term skin’s health.
- Educate your daughter about skin care and encourage her to start a routine – morning and night.
- Encourage her to go makeupless as often as possible – maybe one day in the weekend?
- Influence what she eats and drinks – decrease sugars, carbs, processed foods and increase water intake with fresh fruit and veges plus good quality protein.
If you’re going to cover acne prone skin with makeup, it’s important to use both skincare and makeup that are working to heal and help your skin.
Use a good cleanser to start and end the day, helping the skin heal and removing any makeup – the Teen Aspect Cleanser is perfect on it’s own or as a Kit!
- Use a pimple treatment which won’t hurt the skin further – Aspect Stop Spot.
- Use a medium coverage foundation over the entire base like Osmosis CC Cream. This will actually cover most blemishes alone and you don’t need too much.
- If there are larger/more prominent red spots, you can then apply concealer sparingly where needed – the Colorescience Mineral Corrector Palette has a range of colours to suit the different skin colour correcting issues. It’s best to apply this after your foundation, so you can control the coverage. Otherwise, you’ll end up using more concealer than necessary and you will end up with full coverage effect.
- Mums – just for you – the Osmosis Colour Age Defying Treatment Concealer will also help you by nourishing and plumping fine lines before concealing!
If your daughter’s skin looks oily/shiny they may want to mattify their skin, so even though the Osmosis CC Cream is so healthy to use, a powder is often the preferred option. The Colorescience Pressed Powders and primers are build-able to a full coverage, so you can use them just on present acne, or apply and reapply over the entire face during the day. Being a medical grade skin care, there are no nasty ingredients to contribute to the current skin condition.

My daughter has fair skin and wants to be tanned like her friends, will fake tan be suitable for her skin?
Lorraine | QLD
- Wearing Fake Tan is not uncommon among female teenage friendship groups. Not all skin is naturally tanned, and in todays climate it is not advisable to try to obtain a tan from the sun’s rays.
If your teenager wants to have a tan like her friends, consider the organic/natural options such as Three Warriors Gradual Tan. This will allow first-time tanners the ability to slowly build up bronzed skin without jumping straight in. There’s effort involved in keeping a fake tan looking good – so always get used to self-application BEFORE trying to also tan your face. We advise using a facial bronzing powder on your face until you are more experienced in applying self-tan. We recommend reading more about its application below;
