Well, we’re definitely in the midst of Winter now. Time for warm cuppa’s, your fav’ blankets and every warming option around you! Brrrrr…  We’ve dedicated this week to our products for dry skin. Hopefully this gives you some inspiration to get your skin back on track!

While having dry skin can be frustrating all year round. Add in the Winter cold and it can get downright painful. Even those of you with normal to combination skin, will find yourself reaching for the moisturiser more often. It’s just a given. The lower humidity during Winter can add to your already dehydrated skin. Any moisture in your skin will evaporate more quickly. This can be a difference of up to 25% just because of the change in humidity, that’s huge! You’re not just imagining it. Your skin really is dryer, and suddenly any over use of soaps and hot water can make it feel extra dry by stripping what natural protective oils you do have. Add hibernating inside where it’s warm, and your indoor heating can add your lips and noses to the dry and chapped list! Even your mucous membranes can’t stand up against indoor heating.

So, what’s the recipe for success? Well, making sure your bodies hydrated on the inside is a great start. Even this won’t completely save you though. While it’s a great theory to stop having your long hot showers and baths in Winter – that’s also not particularly appealing hey! We’re certainly not planning to take long cold showers during the middle of Winter. So, what are we using here in the clinic to protect our skin from dehydration? We’ve all slightly differing products but all very realistic solutions that you may like to hear about!

Product Review Meg

The skin on my face is on the oily side, so I don’t often use deeply hydrating facial products, but boy do my legs get dry – especially my shins! Probably because of the fact that I like long hot showers and the heaters on 22 degrees, so at times my shins have resembled a lizard that died in the sun. You know that scaly dry skin? Sometimes it gets super itchy too.

I recently wrote an article on skin care for the body, and I did admit that it was only new to me, and I am still trying, but for many many years, I have neglected the skin from my neck down. It’s a work in progress…

When this review topic came up, it reminded me of the commitment I made to my poor old shins, and so for the last month, I have been very diligent in applying the right products to my body – even though my skin care routine now takes about 20 minutes each night!!! But if I shut the bathroom door, forbid anyone to enter, it’s actually a very nice way to unwind at the end of the day. I’ve been using two products on my body that I really love. I’ve been washing my body with the Eco Tan Coconut Mint Body Wash each morning, and I use Medik8 Nourishing Body Cream to moisturise morning and night, and this is the one that I’m going to review.

What is it?

A moisturiser for your body that contains cocoa butter, natural glycerin and Medik8’s signature MOISTURE MAGNETS!!……

What does it do?

These Moisture Magnets contain an extraordinary hydrator called saccharide isomerate. This is similar to the natural carbohydrate complexes found in the upper layers of the skin. It is able to bind to skin cells like a magnet and then draw water to itself, providing deep hydration where it is needed the most. Pretty cool right?! This rich body moisturiser is perfect for use straight after a shower to keep skin soft and silky. It can also be used to help soothe sunburn, calm irritation and stop itchiness (this it really does do – just ask my shins)

How to use it:

Pretty obvious, just massage it all over your skin. For a little helpful hint for those like me with super dry body skin, use it when you are still slightly damp for better absorption. Medik8 also recommends adding a couple of drops of a hydrating serum to the body cream, so if you want to supercharge it, perhaps you could add some Medik8 Hydr8 B5 or a Hyaluronic serum that you might have. I haven’t done this because I am too stingy with my expensive serums!

I have been applying the cream all over my body in the morning after my shower, and just to my shins and hands at night before I get into my pyjamas.

What is feels like:

It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave you feeling greasy which is good because I wear silk pyjamas (I know, I’m so fancy) and I don’t want greasy body cream on my fancy jammies!

Is it worth it?

I always like to add this question, because I don’t want any readers to feel as though they need to buy everything we recommend or feel as though they are missing out if they don’t have it, so with this body cream, I am going to say yes, it is worth it, but only if you have super dry skin. Otherwise, you can probably get something a little cheaper at the chemist (just be aware of the ingredient list though). Because I am in my 40’s now and am getting a lot more reflective and wise in my old age, I like to know that I am using products that are not just good for me, but are also made from ethically sourced materials and from a company that practices sustainability.

This is why I decided to stock Medik8 and why I love using their products. You can read all about their ethos here.

I don’t generally suffer from dry skin on my face, but I file my nails on the heels of my feet. Better sort that.

I remember a customer ringing the clinic one day requesting some information about Aspect Hydrating Mask. She had recently been on a cruise and had met a lady, who would have been in her 60’s, and said she had the most beautiful dewy skin. After asking this lady what she used for her skincare, she told her every morning and evening she would use Aspect Hydrating Mask. Just like a normal moisturiser. Wow! I thought to myself ‘beautiful dewy skin”, I want some of that. I bought one that day.

Aspect Hydrating Mask

I don’t use it as a normal moisturiser, however, but I do use it as a leave on mask overnight. Probably two or three times a week, or whenever I feel I need some extra hydration after my serums, and it’s brilliant. It seems to plump up and flesh out any fine lines. Containing all of those wonderful hydrating ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Shea Butter and Olive Oil. It also contains a Retinol like product, so I suggested to the customer who called, not to use it as a moisturiser during the day, just to be on the safe side.

So if you need some extra moisture in your life, try Aspect Hydrating Mask.

Actually, idea! My heels may love it! I’ll try that tonight, pop it on, some socks over the top, I’ll let you know how I go 🙂 Probably have to buy myself a nail file.

Product Review Phillipa

“I’ve said this before, but I love Aspect SMC! Yes, it now has the full name, Super Moisturising Complex on the bottle, but it’s still SMC to me. I use this as my night cream, and it leaves me feeling so soft and hydrated when I wake. It has some really powerful healing and hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, and Stem Cell Extracts which help rejuvenate the skin while I sleep. It’s a thicker cream than I used to use, but as a night cream it’s perfect. I only need a small amount, as I’m using both Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals Foundation (with Hyaluronic Acid & Vitamin C) and Osmosis MD Boost (with Peptides) misting during the day. This means that I’m not as dry to begin with, and I’m using less moisturiser. Of course, I use Aspect Dr Hydra Shield as my morning moisturiser as I still wear SPF all year round… it must be time to experiment with that next! ”

Product Review Meagan

“For prolonged dryness (ie. Winter in Tasmania with heating, hot showers and harsh conditions) I religiously use Osmosis MD Immerse facial oil. It’s designed to be added to any moisturiser for an extra boost of hydration, but I apply before moisturiser and really massage it into the skin. It’s such a powerful dose of antioxidants, it leaves you with a visible glow on the higher plains of the face, but isn’t greasy at all, as its fast absorbing. I use both morning and night, and really feel like it plays a huge part in my skin hydration levels.”
