Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Therapy (PRP) is a method of treatment becoming widely popular in many medical fields including cosmetics. During the procedure, the patient’s blood is collected and undergoes centrifugation (spinning) in order to concentrate and activate the platelet count. The blood is then injected into the relevant site under local anaesthetic. Platelets, when activated, release chemicals known as growth factors, which stimulate tissue cells to synthesise and form new, healthy tissue. This relatively simple and minimally invasive procedure utilises healing properties in the blood to initiate a greater healing response in tissue that is failing to repair.
How can it help my face?
This procedure uses your own blood platelets to stimulate new cell growth. It can assist your skin texture and complexion as well as restoring lost facial volume. As it uses your own platelets there is no risk of allergy or rejection of the injectable.
- Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
- Tightening and toning the skin
- Mild volume loss
- Crow’s feet and dark under eye circles
- Acne scarring
- Rosacea
What does the treatment involve?
You have a volume of blood taken, according to what your desired treatment area is. Your blood is then placed in a centrifuge for up to 10 minutes, separating the red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. Your rich platelets are then extracted and injected into the skin as required.
Are there any side effects?
After this procedure most people experience swelling, bruising, redness or heat. These are common and are a part of your bodies natural healing reaction. Our Doctor will discuss with you the appropriate after care procedures for your treatment. Depending on the treatment you can return to work after 2 days and expect a full recovery between 10-14 days.
How long does it last?
We recommend a series of three treatments at four to six weeks apart, when your results start to show. You will see an improvement in your skin’s texture and collagen product for up to 18 months. Please keep in mind this is using your own platelets, so any underlying health issues can play a role. Illness, smoking and stress can all reduce your bodies healing reaction to the platelets.
Who can have this treatment?
As with most of our injectable procedures, we don’t recommend them for women who are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. We also don’t recommend this procedure for people on anti-coagulation treatment, autoimmune conditions, those having suffered cancer or who have certain implants. We are happy to discuss your situation to determine if this procedure is appropriate for you. Your medical history will be discussed to determine your suitability.
