Our skin care routine can be serious business. For some of us (like me) it can take a good 15 minutes every night. Although 15 minutes seems a lot of time to spend on my skin care routine, I find that by the end of the day it’s something that I really look forward to. Just like taking off my bra at the end of the day, washing my face and applying all my serums makes me feel instantly better. It’s a bit of time to myself before I start the business that the evening brings, like cooking dinner and spending time with my kids. Double cleansing for me, aside from being one of the most important parts in my routine, also adds further peaceful me time!
The Benefits of Double Cleansing
Double Cleansing, meaning to cleanse twice, has been a recommendation by skin care professionals for ever. Cleansing your face at the end of the day to remove makeup, dirt and pollutants is the most important step of your skin care routine. By not cleansing your face before bed, you are increasing the chance of breakouts. You will also have a buildup of dead skin cells, leaving a dull appearance.
Double cleansing ensures that after makeup, SPF and grime has been removed, you can then more thoroughly clean your skin. This will also allow your serums to penetrate deeper, allowing for optimal efficacy.
When to Double Cleanse
Even if you are not wearing makeup, it is still important to cleanse your face at the end of the day. Sweat, your SPF, the days grime and pollutants will accumulate on your skin. They will clog your pores and contribute to the break down of collagen, resulting in the development of wrinkles.
However, Double Cleansing with a cleanser is not suitable for everyone. Those who suffer from dry, irritated or Rosacea skin should cleanse, followed by a water rinse. The use of too much cleanser will further dry and irritate the skin.
How to Double Cleanse
Step 1
First, to remove your makeup, SPF and the days grime. Use a micellar water or a pre-cleanser, such as Osmosis’ Lift Away or Medik8 Micellar Mouse. These will both effectively remove makeup and dirt without stripping your skin.
Step 2
Now that you have removed all the impurities, step two is just a good old fashioned cleanse and lather. Use lots of water and a good massage around your face with your finger tips. To get deep into your pores, use a upwards motion, going against your hair follicles. Medik8’s got a fan favourite in Surface Radiance Cleanse.
Rinse well with warm water and apply serums!
Once a week, you might like to add an exfoliator (after cleansing). Aspects Fruit Enzyme Mask or Aspect Cellablation are brilliant and will shift any dead skin cells, giving you a lovely smooth finish!
Happy cleansing!
