Cosmetic Therapies (Injectables) vs Skincare

Injectables vs Skincare

Are you in two minds about cosmetic therapies (injectables) vs skincare? Many are – including me. I’ve actually have some wrinkle/muscle relaxing treatments. Since moving away though, I only get it when I come back home and see our amazing Dr Christine in our clinic. I can say though, as much as I love the results, I am not really missing it. Although the wrinkles on my forehead are a little more prominent, together with my skin care and my Omnilux at home light therapy, I am noticing some great results that means I feel I can get away with twice yearly injections!

Cosmetic Therapies (Injectables) – How they works

A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment. Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. There are a few brands that are registered for use with the TGA in Australia, and they work beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look a little ‘fresher’.

What can Cosmetic Therapies (injectables) help with?

These injections are used primarily for the ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. They’re also used to treat conditions such as neck spasms (cervical dystonia), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), an overactive bladder, teeth grinding and lazy eye. Some people can also find relief from migraines.

Most injections use a toxin called onabotulinum toxin A to temporarily prevent a muscle from moving. This toxin is produced by the microbe that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning. Other products now include abobotulinum toxin A, rimabotulinum toxin B and incobotulinum toxin A. Each is a little different, particularly when it comes to dosage units.

Who should you see for your Cosmetic Therapies?

Preferably these injections are performed in a doctor’s office or aesthetic clinic, in some parts of Australia you have to have a Doctor present. Your doctor uses a thin needle to inject tiny amounts of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles. The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the extent of the area being treated. You will typically find these injections usually begin working one to three days after treatment. Depending on the problem being treated, the effect may last three months or longer. To maintain the effect, you’ll need regular follow-up injections. When you are having injectables vs skincare you are not always taken through ideal skincare routines. It is simply assumed that you will continue these treatments to improve your skin.

PRP – Keep your eyes our for this!

We also recommend trying platelet rich plasma, using the most potent healing part of your own body to improve skin elasticity. It can cost more initially (although cheaper over time if it works well) and not everyone has the same results, as it’s dependent on your bodies response.

Skin Care!

Cosmetic Therapies (Injectables) vs Skincare is often considered as one-vs-other…

I have to admit, it does surprise me how many of our cosmetic therapy clients do not use good skin care. I believe what happens is that those who have regular wrinkle/muscle relaxing and volumising treatments, begin to rely solely on that. So they don’t understand that skin care will dramatically change the way their skin looks – the most noticeable being tone and texture, but under the surface, good skin care will be working its magic to assist in rebuilding your skin.

If you are using medical strength skin care together with your wrinkle/muscle relaxing or volumising treatments, you will have a much better outcome, and the results can even last longer! The number one factor when looking for skin care that will either complement or replace injections, is to look for ingredients that will stimulate collagen. Collagen are the connecting fibres of your skin and the ‘scaffolding’ that will hold it all up and in place. As we age and our collagen diminishes, using products that stimulate collagen is a must.

Skin Care that replaces Botox

Here are our recommendations for skin care that will aid in strengthening the epidermal barrier, promote collagen, hydrate the skin and even out your tone and texture, and for ageing skin, we just love Osmosis!

Basic Routine – Cleanse, Exfoliate, Hydrate and Protect

  1. Osmosis Purify. A beautiful enzyme-based cleanser that will clean without stripping
  2. Osmosis Protect. A lovely daytime moisturiser with SPF in the form of zinc, which is a natural anti-inflammatory
  3. Osmosis Hydrate. A night time moisturiser full of hyaluronic acid to restore your moisture content
  4. A great weekly/twice weekly exfoliant is Osmosis Polish. It uses cranberry enzymes to dissolve the ‘glue’ that sticks dead skin cells together, leaving your skin lovely and soft

Skin Improving Serums

  1. Osmosis StemFactor. Using stem cells to rebuild your skin, this serum will take your skin to the next level of smoothness and hydration, firmness, and youthfulness
  2. Osmosis Rescue. Literally will rescue your skin. Complete epidermal repair to calm and strengthen your skins barrier
  3. Osmosis Catalyst AC-11. This is one of the best age reversal serums available. It combines vitamin C and amino acids to rebuild, treat and prevent pigmentation, stimulate collagen and give your skin antioxidant protection
  4. Osmosis Correct. A vitamin A serum that is delivered gently into the skin for optimal anti-ageing results. Vitamin A is the best vitamin for collagen synthesis
  5. Osmosis Refresh is a lovely eye cream that reduces puffiness, fine lines and dark circles

Bundles

(Osmosis is expensive, so we have created bundles which offer a saving)

  1. Osmosis REVERSE. This bundle includes the serums from above, as well as a collagen supplement that makes you feel more energised and promotes collagen in the skin
  2. Osmosis REVERSE PLUS. This bundle includes the serums as well as the above cleanser, day time moisturiser, night time moisturiser, eye cream and the collagen supplement. It does not include the weekly enzyme mask.

Skin Care that compliments cosmetic therapies

All of these products above will greatly compliment your wrinkle/muscle relaxing treatments, but if you are someone who prefers to simply have an injection every few months and use little skin care, our suggestions below should keep your results

lasting longer:

  1. Société i-Complete is a two-step age reversal regimen designed specifically for use following injections and other anti-ageing procedures to maximise, enhance and extend results. The iComplete Kit features two synergistic products: The Intense Firming Complex and the Skin Hydration Complex
  2. Couple the above with a vitamin C and a vitamin A, and you have yourself covered with all the essentials
  3. Of course, sun protection is the best way to avoid premature wrinkles (as well as sun spots, dead skin buildup and an uneven tone), so finding a good SPF that you use each day is imperative.
