A Guide To Flawless Makeup

Flawless Makeup - My makeup won't stay on

Over the next few months, our article topics will feature real life questions that we have been asked either in the clinic or from one of our free online skin consultations, and this question about flawless makeup comes from one of our regular online shoppers, Megan. Her question is: ‘Help!! My makeup won’t stay put. Why?’

Want flawless makeup? Start with your skin type!

‘Flawless’ makeup isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. For some, it might mean a natural, ‘no makeup’ look that enhances your features without covering them up. For others, it might be a full-coverage look that evens out skin tone and creates a more dramatic effect.

For our customer Megan, she likes to have good coverage as she suffers rosacea and flushes a lot throughout the day. Megan works in a customer facing role, and she is quite self conscious about her skin. She prefers a liquid to a powder, and she wants a foundation that will last the day. Her current foundation goes blotchy by lunchtime, and she needs to regularly blot her skin and reapply her foundation.

The key to achieving your version of flawless makeup is to first understand your skin type and tailor your routine accordingly. Just like skincare, makeup works best when it complements your unique complexion. But here we are going to discuss Megan’s skin and give a solution to this common makeup conundrum!

Makeup that won’t stay put?

Megan’s makeup issue is a common one, and the first thing that I did was to look up Megan’s purchases from us to see what she is using on her skin in terms of skin care. If we can get the skin in better condition, the makeup won’t be such an issue. Having said that, I also wanted to offer Megan an instant makeup solution.

From her purchasing history, I could see that Megan has made some good skin care choices, and also some not so great ones. Rosacea requires special care, and you can read more about that here. If we can work on guiding Megan to use the correct products to heal her skin, she will be much happier.

So the first thing that I did was to get Megan off the skincare that I believe may be exacerbating her rosacea, and that was an exfoliant that uses granules (too harsh), a clay mask (too drying) and a vitamin A that was too strong for her skin type. After suggesting the correct skincare, Megan can work on healing her skin, creating a better base to achieve flawless makeup.

Mineral makeup for a flawless finish

Megan hadn’t purchased makeup from our clinic before, and was using a liquid foundation that promised staying power. Because of Megan’s skin type, coupled with skincare that wasn’t quite suitable, the makeup was just slipping off. Rosacea is best with a 100% mineral based makeup. Good quality mineral makeup contains zinc, a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient – so straight away by switching to a zinc based product, Megan will get better results.

We only stock good quality mineral products, and each brand has different options depending on personal choice.

For Megan, she wanted a liquid that would look quite matte. Jane Iredale Beyond Matte was the one I recommended for her. This is a thicker foundation that has buildable coverage. It comes in a neutral base, yellow base or a pink base. Deciding on the colour is always the hardest when you are purchasing online. Because Megan is a regular customer, we sent her a few sample pots of different colours. Megan ended up deciding on the colour she liked and she also purchased the Amazing Matte Finishing Powder to absorb any excess oil and reduce shine. This powder uses corn-starch as its main ingredient, another anti-inflammatory ingredient.

Megan’s Update

A few days after Megan purchased the makeup, she emailed us this:

Hey Meg, thanks for your suggestion. I really like the matte liquid foundation, and it has helped a lot. I would probably get a lighter shade next time, as it is quite thick. I don’t have to reapply, which is good, and I love the finishing powder. The osmosis rescue serum is helping too, and although my skin was quite red after first using it, it has now settled and is less red than it’s ever been just after a few days of using it morning and night! I really love the Jane Iredale range and I’m going to purchase a concealer if you can suggest one?

After checking with Megan what she uses the concealer for (she said to brighten her under eye area) I suggested the Osmosis Flawless Concealer. This is a great liquid concealer that blends so well and feels like silk.

We love happy customers!! If you have a skin concern, you can email us at info@theskincareclinic.com.au. We would love to help you achieve your best skin.
