Winter has only just begun, yet we’re almost certain you’ve noticed some changes in the texture, appearance and feel of your skin. Your showers are hotter, there’s heating on, you find you aren’t drinking as much water. All of a sudden, your previously glowing, hydrated skin is looking a little dull. Once Winter arrives, your skin goes through some changes, there’s no doubt about it. Our Winter Makeup Essentials starts with the treatment and prevention of dehydration ASAP! Have your skin well prepped, primed and hydrated before those harsh cold days take hold.
Hydration is always your first Winter Makeup Essentials
Even for those of us with oily skin, products should focus on hydration. Whether this is in the form of face masks, serums or moisturisers, your skin must be force fed luxurious and rich ingredients to promote collagen production and cell turnover. Speaking of cell turnover, this is important as you need to decrease dead skin cell build up. This build up is what’s contributing to that awful dull look staring back at you in the mirror. It is also easily removed with the correct products and treatments. Use fruit enzymes and stimulating ingredients, like in Osmosis Polish, to buff back that thick evil layer of skin. Pair your weekly at home treatments with a monthly visit to your local skin care clinic for a facial (Lactic peels are perfect) and you’ll be the envy of all your friends who don’t know the secret.
When it comes to makeup during the frosty months, there’s no need to mute or tone down colour because the mood has. Keep your foundation and colour fresh and glowing. You can hide behind big jackets and winter knits, but your face is always on show. Use highlighters gently on the higher plains of your face for a subtle healthy glow. We’re not talking Hawaiian holiday, more porcelain glowing healthy skin. Flushes of pastel on the cheeks to warm up those pale, chilly features and dewy, healthy foundation. Powder will only accentuate dryness, so best for our oily friends. A hint of translucent powder is perfectly fine though – and great to keep in your handbag for touch ups!
Winter Makeup Essentials For Your Stash
Here are our top makeup recommendations to stock your makeup bag with this season. As you can see, we’re all slightly obsessed with Jane Iredale over here. We’ve tried a lot of product and there’s nothing that really compares! Great for our skin, yet making us look beautiful? Thank you, we’ll take two!
Primer
It’s important to prepare your skin for foundation, especially when it’s on the drier side. You need a nice even canvas to achieve a nice even finish. A primer is a wonderful way to protect and feed the skin nutrients whilst keeping your makeup in place. Try the Jane Iredale Smooth Affair primer – there’s even an oily skin formula! If you’re trying to fix under your eyes then you can’t go past Medik8’s Dark Circles Tinted Primer.
Foundation
Whether you like sheer or full coverage foundation, the Jane Iredale range uses mineral products, so we know they aren’t affecting all that work you’ve been doing on your skin care. For a sheer to full coverage that is build-able try Amazing Base SPF 20 (luminous finish) or PurePressed Base SPF 20 (semi-matte finish). A sheer to medium coverage is best achieved with Liquid Minerals (dewy finish) or Dream Tint SPF 15 (light finish). For a full coverage with a velvety finish Glow Time SPF 25 is the best option.
Contour/blush/bronzer
We all feel like we need a colour boost in Winter. Our Summer glow has disappeared, and we need that freshness. Jane Iredale Contour kit is honestly the best combination of colours available in a palette. Choose from Cool, Warm or Deep and it’s all the face colour you’ll need this season. Use on your eyes and or cheeks to create a beautiful monochromatic look.
Lipstick/Gloss
Brighten your day, and everyone around you, with a splash of lip colour. Being super hydrating, Jane Iredale lipsticks won’t leave your lips flaky or dull, they continually hydrate, giving you a plump, glossy look. There are a range of lip colour options though available, so check them out.
Balm and hand cream
These two products, whether it be lip balm, body balm, face mask in balm form, hand cream, they will be your ultimate friend this Winter. By having a stash in your handbag, makeup bag, car, bathroom, you will be able to reapply to your chapped lips and dry hands on a regular basis and will always feel hydrated. There’s nothing worse than that dry, rough hand feeling, or your lips so dry you can hardly smile. It can be quite obvious, so do your best to keep yourself plumped!! Wonderful products for this are the Aspect Gold hand cream, Aspect lip balm, CosMedix Rescue and Jane Iredale Hand cream.
All in all, our advice is keep makeup simple and fresh. Keep your winter makeup essentials stocked up. Ensure your skin is constantly hydrated and that you’re FEELING hydrated. It will show in your glowing skin, so use your makeup to accentuate that!
