The Importance of Exfoliation – What We Use Ourselves!

The Importance of Exfoliation and what we use ourselves

Exfoliation is a crucial step in any skincare routine as it helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface, revealing a fresher, more radiant complexion. By clearing away these cells, exfoliation prevents clogged pores, reduces the likelihood of breakouts, and allows skincare products to penetrate more deeply and work more effectively.

Regular exfoliation also promotes cell turnover, which can improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance. Additionally, it can stimulate collagen production, contributing to firmer, younger-looking skin. However, it’s important to exfoliate correctly and choose the right type of exfoliant for your skin type to avoid irritation and over-exfoliation.

This week’s staff review, we let you know our favourite exfoliation products. Which would be at the top of your list? Leave a review yourself!

Meg’s Exfoliation Review

“Exfoliation is something I put up there with having my nails done… a complete pick-me-up that instantly makes me look and feel better. Although I do exfoliate more than getting my nails done, my skin can tolerate deep exfoliation because it’s thick, hardy skin, like an old leather bag. Not really, but also kind of…

My skin can handle exfoliation easily two to three times a week, and I mix up the exfoliators I use.

For a manual exfoliant that uses granules, I’m using Zo Skin Health Exfoliating Polish which is a real joy not only on my skin, but on my nose! It smells so good. Fresh, citrusy with a hint of tea tree… so nice! I use this twice a week and love it for the gentle way it removes dead skin and congestion. In between, I use my old faithful friend Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask. Yes, I bang on about this one a lot, so if you haven’t tried it yet, then why not!? It’s so effective, you can literally feel the dead skin roll up under your fingertips. Plus it’s suitable for everyone, even those with dry skin. I think I’ll give one of these to each of my family members for Christmas this year – must remind myself of that good idea…

So get into a good exfoliating routine, even if it’s only once a week. You’ll notice clearer, softer, more refined skin that looks healthier.”

Julie Product Review

Julie’s Exfoliation Review

For me exfoliation is like a fine wine—best enjoyed in moderation! Sure, scrubbing away dead skin cells sounds satisfying, but if I overdo it, I’m generally left with a face that’s redder than a tomato at a sunburn convention. Too much exfoliation leaves my skin confused and emotional, much like menopause, and I have impaired my skin barrier more than once because of it!.

I have to go easy, exfoliate carefully, and resist the urge to do it with physical scrubs/polishes more than once a week, however, If I am using a vitamin A product regularly, I will leave it to a fortnightly or three weekly application and let the retinoid do most of the work in the meantime, gently exfoliating overnight. But, as I am currently taking a break from vitamin A products, I have been alternating weekly between the Zo Skin Health Exfoliating Polish and the Societe Micro Foaming Polish. Both polishes use physical exfoliants to be rid of those cells that have died of natural causes. They do look and feel quite different, but with a similar end result. The Zo Skin Exfoliating Polish is a pretty blue colour and uses magnesium oxide crystals, and the Societe Micro Polish is an earthy green, using diatomaceous earth and quartz. I use them all over too, not just on my face, and this is awesome before applying your favourite body lotion. My skin, being of a more mature age, generally sculls body creams like a Scotsman drinking… anything, leaving me wondering where it disappeared so quickly, but applying after exfoliating, I am left feeling like I have actually moisturised.

I must make special mention of the Three Warriors Tasmanian Sand Scrub, I used this prior to the others, and if you want a physical scrub with a more hydrating feeling, this is lovely, smells great too, and is packed full of natural organic ingredients, plus at a very affordable price.

So in conclusion go easy on exfoliation, remember it’s a glow up, not a demolition job (what I have been so guilty of)… true to form, always learning the hard way!

Pip Product Review

Pip’s Exfoliation Review

“As someone with sensitive skin, finding the right exfoliating mask is always a challenge. The CosMedix Elite Awaken mask has been a game-changer for me! It provides a gentle yet effective exfoliation as well as hydration, so it doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or irritated. I love that it brightens and smooths my complexion without over-stimulating it. After each use, my skin feels refreshed, soft, and more balanced. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for days when my skin feels dull but needs extra care.”
