We know, all you want to do is slather on that foundation and give your skin an even flawless coverage BUT makeup applied without prepping skin first, is a recipe for disaster. Whatever your skin type, foundation with no moisture underneath, will move through out the day causing patchy, uneven, dehydrated, powdery looking complexion. By following a few quick steps, you’ll notice a dramatic difference in the outcome of your makeup application.
A Clean Start To Prepping Skin
First, ensure your skin is clean! Use a gentle mild cleanser, Osmosis MD Purify, to remove any dirt, impurities and oil. If you’re touching up your makeup during the day, or heading out after work, grab a bottle of Micellar Water and a few cotton pads, to keep in your makeup bag. This cleanser is wonderful for cleansing the skin, without irritating, scrubbing or rubbing your face, and bonus – no water required!
Hydrated Skin Makes Everything Easier When Prepping Skin for Makeup
Secondly, a hydrated skin is a healthy skin. This goes for our oily friends out there as well. A common cause of oiliness in the skin, is dehydration! The skin is starving for moisture and will then create excess oil to compensate. It’s very important to add in that hydration and rectify. Using ingredients which retain moisture, such as Hylauronic Acid, will instantly plump the skin and give a smooth, fresh healthy appearance for your products to glide over. If you have quite dry/dehydrated skin, an oil- based product, such as Aspect Dr Redless is a wonderful addition, as it gently gives the skin a subtle glow. Use all over, or on the higher plains of your face (such as cheekbones) for a natural radiance. It can also be lightly tapped into the skin after foundation for an extra sheen.
Remember Your Primer
To keep your foundation in place (especially if you’re applying products with slip, like oils) add a primer as your base. This will give you a smooth finish, whilst extending the duration of your makeup. Products like Colorscience Even Up work wonderfully to conceal pigmentation and uneven skin tone, whilst keeping your makeup in place and adding a SPF 20 win! Colorscience All Calm is another beautiful primer, designed to conceal rosacea and acne whilst feeding your skin daily dose of antioxidants (and protecting it with SPF50!!)
Last step is to add a moisturiser that you feel comfortable with. Drier skin will tend to reach for the heavier, rich creams like Aspect Dr Resveratrol or Aspect SMC, whereas our oilier customers prefer something light and fresh, gel based and oil free. Great examples are Aspect Sheer Hydration and CosMedix Shineless. Moisturiser is an important step, as we don’t want our skin producing extra oil (and moving our foundation) to compensate for the lack of hydration. Just ensure it isn’t too rich for your skin, as they can sometimes ball up under your fingers making it impossible to blend your foundation on top! A test run might be needed if it’s a new product!
Prepare Skin Before Foundation
Okay, it’s now time to apply your foundation. Remember, never, ever, apply before prepping skin again! Also keep in mind, you’ve done some great work adding skincare to give you a lovely hydrated finish, so the last thing you want to do is apply too much foundation or concealer and mattify it all. Simply add a light coverage of foundation and concealer on top, only in the places you desperately need to. Follow on with your colour products, also being light handed. Natural finish is best for a youthful and fresh look.
A hot tip from us: If you have a special event, or you’re feeling like your skin is a little dull/lifeless perhaps it needs a boost. Try using products full of peptides and natural exfoliants the evening before to refresh and plump your skin. Our top picks for doing so are the Aspect Dr Fruit Enzyme Mask, Osmosis Polish Mask which contain fruit enzymes which naturally break down dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, leaving you with a brighter, clearer, smoother and more hydrated complexion.
Société Rejuvenating Peptide Gel sheet mask is also at the top of our list for achieving this (actually we’re pretty certain you’ll receive the most enviable skin of the evening award). Full of peptides, collagen and potent antioxidants, it has all the lovely ingredients your skin craves during the dryer times. After applying, rub the left-over gel into your skin to absorb overnight and Voila! Soft, plump makeup-ready skin the next morning.
