We understand, you want (and need) to wear makeup every day, but lately your trusty foundation is surprisingly dulling your appearance… and what’s this? It wasn’t just a bad skin day, you’re actually looking tired and feeling older EVERY day? Agh! It may be time to delve into that makeup bag and make some changes.
As we age, our skin makes some radical changes. In most circumstances, the makeup routine we’ve been using for the past 10 years isn’t going to make these changes with us. After 30 (we hate to put a number on it) but after thirty your skins radiance depletes. You may find you’ll need to add a little ‘fake it till you make it’ into the mix, just to feel as spring chicken as the times gone by.
Looking younger needs to start with your skin
The first and most important step, is to make sure your skin is hydrated for younger looking skin. It sounds obvious, but a dehydrated skin will accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, flaky skin, and dullness. Using products that contain hyaluronic acid will help to retain moisture and instantly plump the skin. Use this under your daily moisturiser and ensure you’re adding a SPF sun protection (the SPF in your foundation usually isn’t enough) plus, added bonus, sunblock will give your skin a lovely glowing finish.
Concealer. Even though you feel like slathering this over every blemish, pigmentation spot, uneven skin tone- resist! The more product on the skin, the cakier your end result will be. Think light, airy, breathable finish. To get this, you’ll need your skin to look like skin! Some help with evening out skin tone is totally fine. Use only a dab where necessary and make sure it’s blended and worked into the skin
Ensure your foundation matches your skin tone and always try to use a brush or sponge to apply. A yellow based foundation tends to have a more youthful finish, but always consult a professional to match that first purchase. Apply sparingly! A full face of foundation can work against you, especially those with a powdered finish. Look at switching to a hydrating, dewy, creamy finish and adding a highlighting liquid under your foundation (a wonderful trick). No one likes an oily face, but by dabbing on your cheekbones and higher planes of the face, it will give you some dimension and shape, whilst adding a natural glow!
Things to avoid when looking younger is your aim
Our best advice when it comes to the ageing debarkle, is to avoid powders! Aim to fill your makeup bag with gels, creams and liquids. Think cream blush and bronzers instead of compact powders. They can take some adjusting to but are well worth it. Women lose fat in their face as they age, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing – those cheekbones will be poppin’, but the lack of collagen can increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Add powder into the mix and you’re stripping the skin of any glow, asking those lines to jump out and be noticeable. The more hydrated your skin is, the younger and fresher you look (and feel).
Our last pieces of advice – take all your colour products down a notch. Change your eyeliner from black to dark brown, your eyeshadow to the closest shade down, eyebrows to a natural tone and your lipstick to a softer tone. You also want your mascara to be a light, fluffy consistency, and consider also switching this to a dark brown. It sounds a bit boring, but trust us, it all makes a difference, we promise!! If you love your colour and this upsets you – don’t worry, while you should tone down your makeup, with age you can often brighten up the colours of your clothing. So rather than putting colourful makeup on, wear a bright scarf or top instead! 😊
