We’ve all taken great thought in our Foundation Product Review, and it really is personal. There are many types of foundation available, and their application and use are really designed towards different skin types and lifestyle. So, to begin with, what are these elusive foundation options? Check out our ‘cheat sheet’ list below.
Liquid Foundations
- BB and CC Creams
– Natural looking colour corrective makeup with a light, luminous finish containing extra ‘good for your skin’ ingredients plus your daily UV protection.
– Good for people who are time-poor and want a light, quick and healthy everyday option which simply does a wonderful job at evening up your skin tones. This is the foundation for people who don’t want to look like their wearing makeup, and don’t want to spend time “getting it perfect”. - Liquid Foundation
– Medium to full coverage with a natural, dewy finish. Nourishes the skin and evens your skin tone. It can be a great option for normal to dry skin, as it has the extra moisture content to keep your skin looking good all day.
– Good for people who love to achieve the perfect finish and prefer the nourishing feeling of liquid to powder.
Powder Foundations
- Pressed Base
– Flawless and semi-matte finish with long-lasting coverage. It can be layered on skin for a light or fuller coverage and, again contains your daily UV protection.
– Good for people who want to vary their makeup coverage and re-apply throughout the day as required. It’s easy to carry in your purse and apply on-the-go. There are also great options designed for oily skin to help mattify and reduce shine. - Loose Base
– Medium to full coverage with a soft finish. It can be mixed in with your moisturiser to create a dewy/creamy foundation or added as a layer over liquid foundations for extra coverage.
– Good for people who love to achieve the perfect finish and often prefer the dryer look and feel of powder (and now some even contain UV protection). - Loose Base Brush
– As above but with a light to medium coverage and in a travel sized container with a built in brush.
– Great if you want powder that is easy to apply on the go with a loose powder finish as above (choose one which contains your daily UV protection) or added as a layer over liquid foundations for extra coverage. It can also be a great way to add extra SPF during the day without disrupting your already made-up face.
Now you know your full list of foundation types, it’s time to decide which ones will feel best and suit your skin type.
Meg’s Foundation Product Review
“Foundation is such a personal choice and it’s really hard to convert someone to a different brand. Even those who come in to the clinic with problematic skin struggle. They begin a new skin care routine yet are reluctant to give up their trusty department store favourite. Often these are the clients that really need to though. As the makeup that you purchase from a clinic like ours not only looks lovely, but also contains ingredients that will promote healthier skin and not clog your pores. They also contain zero toxic chemicals, which is what we all need to be moving towards in terms of what we put on, in and around our bodies.
I’m reviewing a pressed powder for my foundation review, because that is what I use most days of the week. My absolute favourite is the Jane Iredale PurePressed Base. The colour I use is Caramel, which is a yellow based honey/tan colour.
Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation
What is it?
A pressed mineral foundation that is slightly more sheer and matte than the loose powders. It’s made from micronised minerals, free of synthetic chemicals, oil free and weightless.
What it looks like:
Just like your skin but airbrushed! I use a large full face brush to apply. I have pretty good skin, so don’t require a lot of coverage, but you can layer it to give more.
Who is it good for?
Most people, especially those with oily skin. If you have very dry skin you are probably better using a liquid.
Great for acne sufferers, just make sure to wash your brushes!”

Julie’s Foundation Product Review
“As I’ve stated in a past review, I’m not comfortable with foundations. And it makes me feel a little sad when I think about all the money I’ve wasted on so many types and brands of foundations over the years.
Now, I’m addicted to my Osmosis CC Cream which in theory, is not a foundation, but it’s the closest you are going to get me to one. I am actually so stuck in my ways, I haven’t even tried any of the gorgeous foundations available in the Jane Iredale range or the Osmosis Colour range of foundations, for that matter. “Are you crazy?” I hear you say. Surrounded by all that lovely makeup everyday, what is wrong with you? Umm, I dunno, old and crotchety I guess. Leave me alone.
Once I have found something I love, it’s like prying candle wax off the table, it can happen, but with quite a bit of effort.
Osmosis CC Cream is the bomb! Hydrating, sheer coverage, with UV protection to boot, and lasts forever. What more could you want or need? Zilch!
I have converted quite a few people to this wonderful product. Why not give it a try? The shades are very forgiving in their suitability too, I can use both Neutral and Warm, with no issue in appearance. The cream pumps out white, then adapts to the colour of your skin, how innovative?
So if you are like me, old and crotchety, and detest the way some foundations seem to highlight imperfections instead of hiding them, try Osmosis CC Cream, you won’t be disappointed.”

Phillipa’s Foundation Product Review
“I’d just run out of my foundation when I found out about this foundation review, perfect timing hey! I’m going to take you through what I’ve since tried and which one I’ve ended up with in my makeup kit. It’s not what I had presumed… and I apologise for making it so long!
So, up until now I’ve been using Osmosis Colour CC Cream and Colorescience All Calm. Well, they’re both awesome products, and I will admit I can’t say enough about them. But, for me, now was the perfect time to switch to Jane Iredale.
I’ve tried medium coverage foundations before, and Meg will attest, they look hilarious on me. Because I have natural colour in my face, when you completely take it away, I tend to look sick. Like I need to then add all the makeup trimmings of blush, eyeshadow and lipstick to bring colour back into my face. This is why I’ve always tended towards sheer and light foundations.
Pure Pressed Mineral Foundation
I’ve started by using PurePressed, as it’s been a while since I’ve used powders. To be honest, this surprised me. I’d forgotten how easy it is to apply and how much control you have over the coverage. I started with a sheer layer, and later tried building it up to a medium coverage. It was very impressive, it felt lightweight and was still looking just as good in the evening when I washed it off. I still had some colour showing, so I looked natural but with a clearer complexion. It had a nice matte feel without making me feel dry underneath. All in all, I’d love to add this to my collection. I’m putting in a little disclaimer here, as I didn’t try amazing base. I figured my girls could destroy it in no time if they decided to try it themselves… the joys of having little eyes watching all the time. I do have a “kid proof” area for my skin care, but my eldest is slowly overcoming all my sneaky tricks.
Liquid Minerals Foundation
The next day I tried Liquid Minerals. This was an eye opener also. let’s start by saying how cool it looks with the little beads! It actually has a sheer dewy feel and I actually chose to build up to a fuller coverage as it felt so good and the finish was awesome. I still felt hydrated and looked just as good in the evening. The dewy feel wasn’t greasy, just like that “just moisturised” feel, and by the evening my skin actually felt better for it. Apart from not having an SPF, I’m totally sold on this as a foundation. It’s so easy to apply, looks great and has that natural “no makeup” look to it. Big thumbs up for me. It’s actually packed full of hydrating and anti-ageing ingredients for maturing skin, so for me, with young kids and little sleep, it’s awesome. I feel myself ageing every day trying to keep up with my girls. Particularly now that we’re all at home together every day!
Dream Tint Tinted Moisturiser
The Dream Tint tinted moisturiser was next. This seemed like the obvious choice as it’s both SPF and a tinted moisturiser. It was actually more matte that I was expecting. Normally I find the SPF options have a greasy feel. It had a thick consistency and using a small amount, I found it a bit harder to blend well. Perhaps my skin was a bit dryer than I realised and I needed primer first. My face does feel moisturised, but I guess my skin is ageing more than I’d like to admit. I was expecting a sheer coverage, but it was definitely more light to medium. It has a natural look due to the matte finish, but doesn’t feel dry on the skin. It was great on all day and I really didn’t notice it until I washed it off. If you’re after a SPF without the greasy feel, this is a big tick. It’s also great for soothing the skin. Perhaps why I enjoyed it so much?
Glow Time BB Cream
Following the SPF theme I tried the Glow Time BB Cream. This is exactly what it says – a full coverage SPF foundation that covers your skins imperfections. As I don’t like covering up too much of my natural pigmentation, it just looked strange to me. If you’re after a full coverage for everyday wear though it would be ideal. It doesn’t feel greasy, once again a big tick and was great on, a velvety rather than greasy feel. When it came to my pigmentation, it really did hide it, to the point I wanted to apply blush and lipstick. S0, for those full coverage makeup lovers I really can’t say enough good things. It’s not for me though, as I just didn’t look like “myself.”
Beyond Matte
This is definitely the true epitome of liquid foundation. Beyond Matte gives you control over how much coverage you want. Definitely not sheer, it starts at a light coverage and gives a nice matte finish. It covered all my pigmentation, definitely the 3-in-1 description is spot on. Primer, concealer and foundation. Thankfully it feels great on also, very light without shine. If you’re tired of doing the “full routine” every day to get a great coverage, I’d highly recommend giving this a go. It is quick to apply and leaves you with an all-day fresh coverage. I still felt strange having so much of my pigmentation gone, so I wouldn’t swap to it every day, but I certainly would for a special event!
After all this, which did I choose? It’s been such a hard decision!!!! I’ve opted for Liquid Minerals with PurePressed for SPF over the top. I already wear a SPF moisturiser Aspect Dr Hydra Shield, so I figure perhaps this Autumn/Winter I can try something more nourishing for my skin?!”

Megan’s Foundation Product Review
“My favourite foundation is definitely the Osmosis CC Cream. This foundation is a whipped, dewy hydrating cream. It feels light and fluffy when first applied to your skin, but the wonderful coverage is noticed as you glide it across your face. It has a great ability to cover redness without making you feel ‘cakey’ or like you’re wearing a lot of foundation.
The pigment changes to match your skin tone (bonus) which gives a beautiful natural finish, so you’re left feeling fresh and dewy – with a lovely brightness to your skin.
Being an Osmosis product, we know that it doesn’t contain any nasty ingredients. All that wonderful work you’re doing with your skin care is safe and sound underneath as you wear this foundation on top!
This product is my personal favourite, as I use an Osmosis skin care routine. I’m always hesitant to even use a foundation lately as I find it gives me a matte finish that I don’t like, BUT this doesn’t do that at all! I love to use face oils and keep my skin hydrated and this product helps to maintain that glow throughout the day. Highly recommended by me! 😊 ”
