Dealing with Enlarged Pores is one of our commonest questions and it covers all age groups. One important fact to note is that we NEED our pores. They cannot be made to disappear, however we can make them less noticeable and we can successfully cover them without clogging them potentially producing an ugly zit.
Generally enlarged pores are seen with younger skins that are oily or which have in the past experienced moderate to severe acne. However middle aged people also have them. These later ones are more often from sun damage and ageing factors.
Imagine a hole in the ground – the surface edges are nice and firm and nothing falls in. Over time with the sun baking down and with movement around it the edges begin to get a bit frayed – bits of dirt start to drift into the hole. Over time as this happens the opening of the hole becomes wider and the edges of the hole become softer and frailer. More and more dirt from the surrounding area falls in.
This is what happens to your pores, why with age they look larger.
The edges of the hole, your pore, contain collagen and this begins to break down over time with constant UV damage and movement. This movement includes harsh products, such as scrubs and treatments. It is just one of the many reasons why a sunblock is such an important part of your EVERY day routine and why harsh products are NOT a wise choice for any age skin.
When you have oily skin acne, or just an oily skin the pores open wide to accommodate the oil and surface sebum. These fall in your “hole” with the days grime and Ta-Da you have your next pimple. Surface pH of your skin is most easily changed with a Vitamin B serum +/- a DNA repair serum.

I have really large pores over my nose and on my cheeks. When I was younger I had really bad acne in these areas and do have some scarring, however now it is the pores which I would really like gone.
What can you do about them?
Hayley | WA | age 27
Hayley needs to introduce an appropriate cleanser to her regime such as Osmosis MD Purify or Aspect Dr Deep Clean.
A weekly mask such as the Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask – terrific for oily acne skins/congested skins.
And because she no longer has acne or super oily skin she should work on the hole edges to minimise the size of her pores – a DNA repair serum such as Osmosis MD Rescue Serum.
If she was middle aged and her skin was in the dry side, the Rejuvaphyl Pore Perfecting Complex should be used in conjunction with the Rescue serum. One in the morning and one at night.
Hayley also needs – as does everyone concerned about the size of their pores, whatever their age a Vitamin A serum and a Vitamin C serum.
And just like the hole basking in the sun, it takes time to repair the edges once they’ve started to break down so perseverance and diligence over time is what is needed.
A little note regarding Hayley’s old acne scars. Unless they are deep very pitted acne scars all the products mentioned for her pores will help these as well… DNA repair serums plus vitamins A, B and C with the addition of TIME. One magical day she’ll wake up and won’t see them any more.
