use a natural purified protein that relaxes the wrinkle-causing muscles that cause facial expression lines to form. It is commonly used to treat the lines of the crow’s feet, forehead lines and the glabella frown lines between the eyes creating a rejuvenated appearance.
The active ingredient in anti-wrinkle treatments is derived from bacteria, just as penicillin is derived from a mould manufactured in sterile laboratory conditions. It has been available in Australia and New Zealand for the treatment of therapeutic disorders for over 15 years, initially treating eye and face movement problems and eye spasms and crossed eyes.
It is only available through registered medical practitioners with the treating staff having been trained by the company itself.
How does it work?
It relaxes specific facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles – those that are formed during facial expressions. Once the muscles have been relaxed you cannot move them; thus the lines gradually smooth (over several treatments) and new lines are prevented from forming.
What does the treatment involve?
It is a non-surgical procedure performed in the doctor’s rooms where a small amount of product is injected into the selected facial muscles using a very fine needle. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief, with no anaesthetic usually required. The injection may sting for a few moments, but soon afterwards normal activities can be resumed. After the treatment, it takes 3–4 days to begin to see the effect and about 7 days to see the full effect.
The dose recommended for the treatment will depend on which lines you are treating, the condition of your skin and the severity of the lines. This will be discussed with you at your consultation.
How long does it last?
The effect can last up to 4 months before lines slowly begin to return. If you have repeat treatments, the effect tends to last longer.
Does the treatment cause more lines to form?
No, it relaxes the facial muscles that cause the expression lines; it does not cause more lines to form. If you choose not to have further treatments, your muscles will eventually return to normal activity and your wrinkles will gradually revert to their pre-treatment levels.
Will facial expression be affected by the treatment?
The product works specifically on the muscles treated. This means that any muscles left untreated should not be affected by the treatment. This will be discussed with you at your consultation.
Are there any side effects?
The doses used for treating facial lines are very small and any side effects are usually temporary and localised. Possible side effects include a headache, pain, burning/stinging, bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids/eyebrows, swollen eyelids, skin tightness, tingling sensations, aching/itching forehead, nausea and flu-like symptoms.
Anti-wrinkle treatments have been used to treat patients for a variety of therapeutic conditions including cerebral palsy, movement disorders, and axillary hyperhydrosis (excessive underarm sweating) with minimal side effects.
Can this treatment be combined with other products and procedures?
Yes, many people use a combination of cosmetic procedures and products to achieve a more rejuvenated appearance. Anti-wrinkle injections relax the dynamic wrinkles, which are formed as part of facial expressions and when we are young they bounce back to give smooth skin. As we age this no longer happens and these wrinkles remain on the skin forming static lines; they are the lines that are present at rest.
Dermal fillers, when placed just under the skin, plump up these lines and folds and are often used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle injections.
